Publisher's summary

Warning: Not to be listened to after dark.

For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried: some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.

Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope; the last apprentice. Can Thomas succeed? Will he learn the difference between a benign witch and a malevolent one? Does the Spook's warning against girls with pointy shoes include Alice? And what will happen if Thomas accidentally frees Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the county?

Easy yet intense

I️ really enjoyed this book. It was not a very complicated book, easy to follow along. There were a couple of time when my heart started pounding and I️ got a little anxious. Fantastic narrator as well. Excited for #2.

great book

I've always loved this book. I don't care much for the voice the reader gives the spook though.

Fairytale Scary!

This story was just what I was looking for. An evil witch, told in a creepy, thrilling way who terrorizes a young magician's apprentice. Good read!

Short but never dull!

Good book. It was nice to listen to a book that didn't take 7 hours before getting to the excitement.

Good read

If you could sum up The Last Apprentice in three words, what would they be?

intriguing Well performed.

What did you like best about this story?

Unknowingly picked a story with a teen lead, nice draw for our son who is a reluctant reader, but avid listener.

What does Christopher Evan Welch bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the creep level

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes and we did.

Any additional comments?

glad to see consistency in the second book's reader.

Great book for all ages

The first book in the series sets the tone of the world very nicely. The voice for Alice is annoying but grows on you after a while. Mother Malkin will make even a adult shudder.

Better than film ( though I liked the effects )

There is a big difference between the recent film and this book.

I liked the film OK ( such gosh-darned nifty special effects! )
I've been looking for the paperback-adaptation to perhaps clear up problems I had with the movie... instead I found this original source, and I'm so glad I did.

All the problems I had with the film were instantly cleared up.
I see how the original is of such quality it became the center of a film.

Hollywood changed the plot, muddled the motivations, and re-wrote almost everything. (naturally)
Really, the only thing they didn't alter was the wording of the title and some names.

The Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a little boy! - ( well almost ) He's a kid! - He's a young man, son! - He's not some full grown unsympathetic idiot like in the movie!

Lesson learned:
Don't judge a book by it's special effect's driven Hollywood re-make.
