For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried: some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.
Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope; the last apprentice. Can Thomas succeed? Will he learn the difference between a benign witch and a malevolent one? Does the Spook's warning against girls with pointy shoes include Alice? And what will happen if Thomas accidentally frees Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the county?

"Delaney grabs readers by the throat and gives them a good shake in a smartly crafted story." (Booklist)
I saw this book and thought I would give it a try and never for one minute during the reading did I regret it. It kept me wanting more all the way to the end, and I still want more. It fit in well with the Halloween season!
I enjoyed the entire series but none more than "The Revenge of the Witch." (The others are sequels.) "Revenge" has the cleverest plot and the most emotion; a real warmth about it. While all may not agree with me on that, most will agree that this book is the one to read first. It opens the series and introduces the main characters, gradually letting you get to discover their mysteries along with Thomas; especially the Spook, Alice, and mam. Great fun, and you don't have to be 13...
Marvelous performance by the narrator.
Great book very well imagined and a nice ghost story. Excited to read (listen to) the rest of the series.
Thus far it is like Harry Potter. A young boy with a gift and a purpose that he as yet has no clue how to use or focus in order to fight for the greater good mostly he is succeeding by accident.
I didn't appreciate the random background music. He makes Alice's character sound sneaky and sarcastic instead of sweet or even innocent. If a girl talked to me in that way with that tone of voice i wouldn't trust her
Haven't finished the book still have about an hour left. at this time I am really worried about Elly and the baby.
I actually bought this book on my kindle first- but the dialect used by the characters was a little distracting and I had a really hard time getting past the fist ten percent. Last night I decided to download the audio book while at work since I had gotten to a particularly sad part in The Return of the King and I needed a break. I am so glad I did. The narrator really brought this to life. I listened all night and I really didn't want to go to sleep this morning. He did a marvelous job with consistency so you always knew which character was speaking. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series and possibly listening along. I wish this was an immersion read so I didn't have to catch myself up by flipping through so many pages. It was worth the extra trouble though. This is a fun story. It has memorable lines such as the fathers advice on women. I highly recommend this if you need a quick walk through a fantasy world.
