Publisher's summary

Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast.

When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare.

Critic reviews

The netherworld of New York City...proves as shuddery a setting for the authors' latest scientific monster mash as the American Museum of Natural History did for their bestselling Relic, to which this is the sequel. ( Publishers Weekly)
"This should do for the New York subway system what Jaws did for Long Island beaches." ( Booklist)
"Dick Hill's reading of this fascinating sequel to Relic builds the suspense and horror." ( AudioFile)

Typical, but...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

yes, but with an asterisk

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

performance was adequate.

Do you think Reliquary needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I know there are follow ups. I intend to read them.

Any additional comments?

I am a fan of Preston / Child. They are my little guilty pleasure. I know they will never win any Pulitzers, but I expected better here. The book was full of monsters and dark, hidden places. Which is why i read Preston/Child. But for some reason I found it difficult to get into this book. I kept drifting out. I enjoyed Relic and Cabinet of curiosities very much. And I will likely read the rest of the Pendergast books, but this one was not as good as the last two.

Eh......

This story however thrilling to a science Junkie wasn't really great for me. I got bored with it half way through. I really didn't get the summary and took a chance. Bunch of non human /reptilians killing people under the streets of Manhattan. REALLY? OK, so I finished it because I was intrigued by a few of the great characters in the book. But other than that it wasn't my cup a.

If you liked relic, you'll love this.

What did you love best about Reliquary?

I enjoyed revisiting the best characters from relic and deeply enjoyed the continuing plot line. I spent many years soaking up the relic storyline before I even realized there was a second book. I was not in the least disappointed!

What other book might you compare Reliquary to and why?

I would compare relic to this on for style. The narrator was better here though. I think Dick Hill did a far better job bringing the characters to life.

Which scene was your favorite?

I don't think I have a favorite scene because different scenes did different things for me. The whole book was a page turner because each scene was critically important to the next one. Without giving anything away, I think the opening scene sets a great tone for the book.

Who was the most memorable character of Reliquary and why?

Pendergast of course but Degosta and Hayward are both prominent and fantastic in this book as well. As a side smaller character, I loved that Snow got his payback eventually.

Any additional comments?

Reread this book again. There are always small things you catch that you did not the first time for sure.

Good story; annoying narration

The narration would have been fine except they kept putting special effects in the story. I find those to be very annoying.

Series - Read in Order

You definitely have to read the first book in this series, Relic. There are many references to the first book and it would be confusing. Otherwishe, the story is OK - not great. I idd enjoy having the same cast of charcters as Relic. They kept the story interesting.

Must read!

This is an epic series! You don't have to read relic to appreciate this book but it just makes it that much better when you are invested in the characters.

Another good Pendergast read

If you could sum up Reliquary in three words, what would they be?

Compelling, suspenseful, interesting

What did you like best about this story?

The story moved a good pace, presented some interesting scientific theory, and likeable characters along with good villains.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the second book in the series, if you like the first book it's a great bet you'll #2.

My new mystery love interest

I am so glad I found this series. I really am enjoying each book. I thought this was an unique type of mystery. I was hooked right away. I also loved learning about the underground life that I am sure exists, in some form. I am on to book 5 Next Cabinet of Curiosity and Still Life with Crows. If you like one I think you will like the ones that follow.
