Reilly's Luck

Val Darrant was just four years old the snowy night his mother abandoned him. But instead of meeting a lonely death, he met Will Reilly - a gentleman, a gambler, and a worldly, self-taught scholar. For 10 years they each were all the family the other had, traveling from dusty American boomtowns to the cities of Europe - until the day Reilly’s luck ran out in a roar of gunfire. But it wasn’t a gambling brawl or a pack of thieves that sealed Will’s fate. It was a far more complex story that Val would soon uncover....

Publisher's Summary

Val Darrant was just four years old the snowy night his mother abandoned him. But instead of meeting a lonely death, he met Will Reilly - a gentleman, a gambler, and a worldly, self-taught scholar. For 10 years they each were all the family the other had, traveling from dusty American boomtowns to the cities of Europe - until the day Reilly’s luck ran out in a roar of gunfire.

But it wasn’t a gambling brawl or a pack of thieves that sealed Will’s fate. It was a far more complex story that Val would soon uncover, one that touched upon Val’s nearly forgotten childhood, the woman who was Will Reilly’s lost love, and the violent future of a growing country.

    "LaMour at his best"
Would you listen to Reilly's Luck again? Why?

Yes, this book has surprizes in each turn and you see it clearer there you hear it.

What did you like best about this story?

Reilly's life becomes devoted to teaching the boy and nothing gets in the way of that devotion.

What does Beau Bridges bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A rough and brisc voice of believability.

"Glad this book is finally here!"

I grew up reading books of Louis L'Amour. I have read this book 20 plus times. So when I saw it was available on audible, I jumped on it. Then to have Bridges narrate it, it was perfect. I just hope they keep making more of his books available, next I am waiting on is Flint!

    "Loved it!"
What did you love best about Reilly's Luck?

The story of hardship turned to riches. Typical Lamour story line but I loved it. Lamour always ends up with the girl, goldmine, horse ranch, water rights and severely flogs all the bad guys donkeys.

What did you like best about this story?

    See above.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    See above.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    See above.

    Any additional comments?

Did I forget to say I loved it? There aren't many Louis Lamour books I don't like. Even if he can't remember that the gun he just tucked his gun in his pants and then drew it from a holster. Or that the rifle his hero is shooting hasn't been invented yet. So what it's a good clean day winning, girl chasing western!

    "One of my favorite stories"
Would you consider the audio edition of Reilly's Luck to be better than the print version?

Not sure -- haven't read in print, but this audio version is truly engaging.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Of course it's Reilly -- to take responsibility for a young child and do an excellent job of parenting is outstanding.

Have you listened to any of Beau Bridges’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He is great in this one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Figuring how to nurse Tensleep thru an injury -- engaging and easy to empathize.

    Any additional comments?

I am a L'Amour fan. This one stands out in a strong field -- great character development and story line.

"Another Great Read By Louis L'Amour"

This is a touching story about a man alone who raises a boy nobody wants, and taught him to be a man. An honest gambler, he and the boy travel in many countries, but it's the west they love.

The narrator gave a good performance.

A must read for L'Amour fans, or great as a first read for those unfamiliar with his stories.

"Not what I'm used to for Lamour..."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Reilly's Luck was not what I'm used to for Lamour but i enjoyed it anyway. I would recommend this to a friend because it kept you wandering what was going to happen next.
