©1935 Georgette Heyer; (P)2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd
June Barrie does a great rendition of the characters of this book. She as easily portrays the dry argumentative Lord Worth as she does the willful beautiful Judith. And the growing suspense is fabulous to listen to.
Loved it! Good characters, gives great insights into the culture and society of the times. It was a 'love' story that was not trite or shallow but Georgette Heyer gives a great 'roundess' to everyday life with the little extras that allows one to lose oneself in the time and the place. I ABHOR the abridged versions because they turn a professional writer like Georgette Heyer into nothing more than Mills and Boon.
This exciting story was narrated by June Barrie who gave a truly splendid performance. I listened to this book in one day because I could not stop! One reviewer said there was not much humor in this book, but I disagree. Indeed, I think that Heyer's earlier books (this one copyright 1935) have all the elements that we, her fans, have come to love and admire. A beautiful, spunky heroine; a handsome hero who knows how to dress, drive his horses and deliver a devilish good left punch, and a host of other terrific characters including one of my favorites: the Earl's trusted tiger (a special type of groom) all come together to tell a very enjoyable story.Thank you June Barrie and thank you Audible.com.
I enjoy how Heyer tells the story from the perspective of the heroine, in this case a young and beautiful heiress. Apparently this was one of Heyer's first regency stories and there is less comedy of errors humor in this one than some of her others but it was still a very enjoyable ride. I am now on my second listen.
"Possibly the best...."
This, in my humble opinion, is the very best of all Georgette Heyer's Regency novels. It has everything: a spirited and beautiful heroine (of course), a powerful and enigmatic nobleman who has control of her and her fortune, intrigue, humour and an abundance of historical detail. This brief description does not do justice to the depth of this novel. It is not a frivolous romance but rather a fascinating and richly drawn window into Regency England
All her books are excellent but other favorites include The Devil's Cub (a favourite of PD James' apparently from an interview on Radio 4!), Faro's Daughter, and Venetia. I hope these are all available on Audible by the time I finish listening to the many that are!
you either like georgette heyer or you don't. i love all the books that she wrote. This one is a good story. Judith Tavener the beautiful heiress and Lord Worth her guardian. The battles between both. I just hope that Audible get all her romantic historical novels. Two of my favourites are The Grand Sophy and The Unknown Ajax.
This is one of my all time favourites and it was a delight to have someone narrate who understood the Characters and brought them to life. Please can June read some of the other books by Georgette Heyer such as These Old Shades which was such a let down that I could not listen to it.
"A Regency Romp"
June Barrie and Georgette Heyer are a winning combination, The narration is lively and the characterisation excellent. Ms Barrie keeps the story moving and the suspense mounting to the final denouement.
I have loved returning to the favorite author of my teenage years on Audible. This story is both romance and mystery and handled with Miss Heyer's flare for the period and ability as a mystery writer.
The story goes at a good pace, royalty, even the Regent himself make an appearance as does the leader of fashion Beau Brummel.
Judith and and her brother Peregrine enter the world of fashion as innocents but their fortune and charm soon find them at the very center of society with the help of their guardian the Earl of Worth; the most obnoxious man Judith has ever met. Many strange events-a forced duel, poisoning, highway robbery, and kidnapping befall Peregrine and suspicion is rife.
This is a brilliant listen for all Heyer fans and for all others who love a good "old fashioned" romance or just a really well told tale.
"Quaintly old fashioned romp"
This is one of those stories that you read when you want to escape from the modern world. It has a very pleasing combination of a feisty heroine and a dashing hero. You only have to look at the cover to know what to expect. A good undemanding read.
"A mixture of regency high life, romance and mystery"
I found this book such a gripping story, I just had to keep on listening(when I should have been sleeping). What held me so captivated was wanting to know: which of Judith's suitors was the bad guy and which the good? As Georgette Heyer has woven this story so intelligently that she keeps you guessing. So the story turns into; not so much of a 'whodunit', as, a 'whose-trying-to-do-it' ! June Barrie's narration adds to the mysterious air. There are also insights into how snuff was blended, which I found surprisingly interesting. Regency Buck is a mixture of regency high life, romance and mystery.
I'm not sure why I downloaded this audio book, but I'm glad I did. It was funny, charming, beautifully read and an all round good, long (which I prefer) listen. Great for a rainy day or a long train ride! Enjoy.
