"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch."
Before there was Philip Marlowe, there was John Dalmas, a character very much like Marlowe. (In some later editions of this short story, the protagonist's name is actually changed to Marlowe's.) Here, he investigates a series of murders in classic hard-boiled fashion.
I really enjoyed this tale; typical Chandler noir style plot and great narration by Elliott Gould. However, at $10 for 90 minutes or so, it's really over-priced. I can't explain why I paid that much - something came over me.
This also ends up on Amazon, so I'll make it short.:)
Co-incidence "nice" cops.
Although the cops were corrupt and more interested in the easy collar than picking up Dumas (sort of a proto-Marlowe) his interference should get more police "involvement."
Heck, he hides a suspect wanted for questioning, disturbs a crime scene and the story starts off with a murder based on co-incidence that is not involved in the plot.
Only of interest if you want to see Chandler's early works before he was Raymond Freakin' Chandler.
Gould's performance was good but there was little he could do.
It was hard not to listen in one sitting. It was mercifully short. Too short for them to abridge it.
Please do not get this as your first try of Chandler. He gets much, much, much better - if you can find a latter work unabridged.
FORTY SOMETHING THUG FOR HIRE WHO ENJOYS A GOOD BOOK.
I AM- WITH OUT A DOUBT - A HUGE FAN OF RAYMOND CHANDLER'S WORK. HE SET THE STANDARD FOR AMERICAN PRIVATE DETECTIVE FICTION, AND HAS RARELY BEEN SURPASSED. AND FINALLY AUDIBLE PRESENTS CHANDLER'S WORK AS IT SHOULD BE PRESENTED, WITH A TOP NOTCH ACTOR READING CHANDLER'S WORDS. ELLIOT GOULD IS THE ACTOR HERE, AND HE DOES A WONDERFUL JOB CAPTURING CHANDLER'S DETECTIVE'S DROLL HUMOR BY GIVING US A DEADPAN DELIVERY. THIS IS NO DRAMATIZATION FULL OF DIFFERENT ACTORS DOING VOICES, AND SOUND EFFECTS. THIS IS WHAT RAYMOND CHANDLER WROTE, AND IS PERFORMED WITH PITCH PERFECT ACCURACY BY THE NARRATOR. JUMP ON BOARD THIS ONE. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
