Publisher's summary

From the author who collaborated with Tom Clancy on Red Storm Rising, this is the book that dares to show us the military hardware, global upheavals, and raw combat a second Korean War would unleash. How F-16s would blast across the 38th Parallel. How ultra-modern submarines would vie for the seas. And how two armies would turn the snowfields of Asia red with blood. A thundering geopolitical thriller of vast scope, this is Red Phoenix - and a new standard for military/political suspense fiction.

Great story

I read this book as a teenager when it came out and it's just as good now as it was then.

A tale that’s aged well …

I didn’t realize when I downloaded this that it was an action/military story that was written and published in 1990. For how old it is, the story has aged well and I enjoyed it. Well worth your time for a listen.

blast from the past

in 1989 we had some of the same fears and some that are no longer relevant.

North versus South, a different Civil War!

Yawn… Not until chapter seventeen, 6:45 hours into the book, did anything remotely interesting happen at or near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Before this was some build-up of the plot to come, the introduction of major characters, hints about Red Phoenix, currant political narratives of the North and the South, and their militaries, and even a budding romance (you know it will blossom!). We finally get to the flap copy once this voluble background account had concluded. When it did, the tempo took off like the proverbial bat out of hell. Now we’re getting somewhere! In a nutshell, N. Korea, taking advantage of riots and chaos in S. Korea, launched an invasion to unite North and South under Communist rule. The ensuing account of the U.S. forces that had been stationed in S. Korea struggling to hold off the N. Korea invasion was quite exciting, and seemingly plausible, considering the beating the U.S. forces took. After slogging through author Patrick Robinson’s sloppy interpretation of war, this was a welcomed improvement. The technology is 1989 issue and well-presented here based on my limited knowledge. The tempo, once it got going, is excellent even though it is a long novel. The budding romance added a nice human touch after all the destruction and loss of life. I liked it, and am looking forward to the next book, although I’m not sure where it will go as this story appears to have closed the door.
