    "4 Star Highland Romance!"

This highland adventure was better than the first in this series (His Bonnie Bride). I thought the main characters in this book were more tenacious, likeable, and believable.

The heroine, Ailis, is a very caring spunky young woman who is courageous and strong. The hero, Alexander, is a man who has trust issues with women. He doesn't start out likable but as the book progresses you find out why he is so bitter.

Overall, this book is an emotional, detailed, action packed adventure that is sure to keep your attention. If you enjoy highland stories put this one on your list!

"IT CAPTIVATED ME UNTIL THE VERY END & I LOVED IT"

Be prepared to be transported through time to a bygone Scotland of 1375 where Clans are fighting for their land, their food and their very survival. Here we meet our heroine Ailis a beautiful, strong, witty, sassy but sweet Laird's daughter who's just an unwilling pawn in the middle of her Father's and her betrothed's wicked plans for her.

But, as with any good Highland adventure, in gallops our hero Alexander (who's a handsome, very alpha Clan Laird) and inadvertently changes all their well thought out evil plans. Now I warn you, you're not going to like Alexander most of the time but he has his reasons for being so bitter towards women so please give him a chance to tell you why past history with women has made him like that. There are passion filled nights with Ailis but by day he's cold and disagreeable towards her and yet there's a vulnerable side to him fighting to get out.

This breathtaking action-packed story has great imagery, an intense plot, some likeable characters and some nasty ones too as it starts off with family greed and follows with kidnapping, revenge, distrust, lust, passion, sex and regrets. But that's followed by family drama in the form of a wee girl being a Seer, a shocking discovery, betrayal, a trap, a hated heartbreaking promise and a tormented gruelling few months as it's not only the seasons that have changed for Ailis before she can finally be reunited with a very changed Alexander. The disputes ends with the inevitable Clan fighting and some tense heart-wrenching scenes before we get the HEA ending that we all desperately want for them.

Worth a credit? Hannah Howell very rarely disappoints and this is another enjoyable Historical romance that ticked all my boxes - so I think this is a very creditworthy addition to my Library and maybe yours too. This is actually book 3 in the series - Audible has missed out book 2 Highland Wedding but they could easily be stand-alone listens.

    "Powerful & Dramatic"

"Reckless" is set in the wild Scotland Highlands of 1375, where daughters are used as pawns to unite Clans, as is the case of our Heroine, Ailis, the only heir to the clan MacFarlane. Her Uncle betroths her to the cruel, repugnant Donald MacCordy, but just before the wedding she finds herself accidentally kidnapped by Alexander MacDubh, the handsome Laird of a clan feuding with both the MacCordys and MacFarlanes.

Although the story-line sounds much like any other Highland story: revenge, clan wars, kidnapping, etc. "Reckless" is a unique story. Hannah Howell's characters are believable, her depiction of the Scotland countryside realistic, and she does a remarkable job writing people as they would have sounded and thought in this time period. Ashford MacNab did a good job imitating a Scottish accent--I had the feeling of being transported back in time.

The characters are well defined, with very interesting secondary characters. I especially liked Jimmy, Ailis' protector.

It's a story of betrayal, revenge, and passion filled nights.

    Well worth a credit.

Not quite as complex or well developed as the first book in the series...but still good and enjoyable HR. Narration is superb! Ashford is one of my favorites.

If you could sum up Reckless in three words, what would they be?

    Captivating
    Lush
    Entertaining

Have you listened to any of Ashford MacNab’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, first time. And except for the voice of Jamie, her voice allowed me to keep my mind on the story and not necessarily on the reader. She did a fine job of telling the story and keeping me interested throughout.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

In a world of brutality and intrigue, loyalty and love endure ....

    Any additional comments?

This was a really great story line. I get tired of romances being only play by play sex and truly enjoy a good story being told. It kept me on the edge of my seat and rooting for Ailis. Thank you!

"Even the coldest of hearts can heal"

Well…this isn't a whimsical story of love with sweeping, leisurely moments of romance. It's more like a story of redemption in the coldest of hearts, and how the fight for love is the worthiest cause of all.

    HERO:
I wish it were not so, but Howell delivers a very emotionally wounded and cynical hero. We were first introduced to Alexander "Alex" MacDubh in "His Bonnie Bride (1st book in series) when he and his family visited the McLagan's keep. He was presented as the easy-going and smooth-with-the ladies, Adonis. The ultimate charmer and sweet talker now devastated by loss, grief, hatred, and an unfettered hunger for revenge. His life since book 1 has not been easy as he has endured traumatic events, at every turn. In general, Alexander seemed to have poor instincts when it came to choosing wives (seriously, the man seemed like an idiot when it came to his previous women). Therefore, women played an instrumental part in destroying everything dear to him. For this reason, he nursed a distrust toward woman just as fiercely as a hatred for his enemies (MacDubh & MacCory clans).

    HEROINE:
I felt like Ailis MacFarlane, heir to clan MacFarlane, had qualities of a Biblical character. Oh my goodness!!!-- Ailis faces the countless challenges that come her way with fortitude, dignity and an inner strength that pushes her through the darkest of hours. Ailis, as many women in her era, served as a chess piece in this game between men. LIttle did she know that being captured by Laird Alexander was about to turn her world upside down, yet lead her to a fulfillment in life that she would have never known prior.

    LOVE STORY:
Well, this is not a fluffy love story, but it's deep, serious and healing. Although the formula is similar to book 1, Alex allows Ailis some freewill while studying her at a distance. In addition, at night he loved her passionately, but treated her with disdain during daylight hours. I like how Ailis dealt with him in this regard---she quickly put him in his place …LOL I felt that for most of Part 1, Ailis was "unpacking" all of the "baggage" Alex brought to the relationship from previous ones. The love development is a bit dry, and mainly because Alex was so emotionally stunted. There are no memorable love scenes or moments between the pair that will leave you breathless….(at least I can't recall any). It's more about two people growing learning to love and trust one another. The bond between Ailis and Alex is tried by fire. Part 2 of this book is really hard on the couple. It's not a pleasant read/listen…both suffer immensely, but ultimately pull through.

    INTERESTING ASPECTS:
~The children in this story are endearing.

~Jamie, who is Ailis's protector and gentle giant of a friend was precious.

~The villains in this story are absolutely horrific. They wield unparalleled power that looms over the MacDubh clan like a dark shadow. Donald MacCordy (the man who started out as Ailis' fiancé) is evil incarnate. Ailis' uncle Colin MacFarlane is also a pretty disgusting character.

~I enjoyed the narrator. I think she did a good job. Her voicing for Alex was a little flat, but who can blame her?--The guy was written like a depressed, beating down man! (that changes thankfully)

    LAST THOUGHTS:
I think you have to be in a certain mood to read this book…maybe a mood to be depressed or in need of angst…..LOL..not sure, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart.

Even though there are dark parts, I pushed forward because I cared for the characters and was rooting for their HEA.

I was disappointed that there was no epilogue, nor inclusion of characters in previous books to tie all of their stories together….oh well. I was hoping to get some insight into Tavis and Storm's lives and "ever after."

After this book, I need to find a light, sweet read…

    Story
"My favorite book was ruined by the narrator!"
Would you try another book from Hannah Howell and/or Ashford MacNab?

I will not purchase another book read by Ashford NacNab. In the book one character is slow witted, not the majority of the cast. The way the dialogue is read on more than a couple of the characters drives me crazy. They were read slow with a lot of hesitation that comes across as the characters be slow, not articulate like I imagined them in the book while reading it. I don't know if it was the narrator trying to do the brogue that created these hesitations, but overall the book was butchered for me.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved this entire story. I loved the stronge female character and her struggle with different trials in her life. I liked the humor in the book. The main male character was so difficult in the story and I liked his transformation.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ashford MacNab’s performances?

No, I will not be trying another book that she reads. If she can make me dislike a reading of my favorite book, then I will not make it through a book that I simply like.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This envoked many feelings in me. I felt anxious, sad and contentment at the end.

    Any additional comments?

This is a fabulous book. I would just encourage readers to read the actual book and not listen to it. This is the first book that I love that I ever had a hard time getting through later on audio. I have read this book probably three times and will pull out at a later date.
