The McCarthys of Gansett Island, Book 3
For four of the best summers of his young life, Luke Harris was in love with Sydney Donovan, a wealthy seasonal visitor to Gansett Island. Then Sydney went off to college and never came back. She married another man and had two children while Luke remained on the island, working at McCarthy's Gansett Marina and wondering what had gone wrong between him and the only woman he ever loved. Fifteen months after Sydney suffers the tragic loss of her husband and children, she's returned to Gansett to figure out what's next, and that may very well be a rekindled love affair with the one man from her past she’s never forgotten. But is she ready for a second chance at love?

This is one of those books that I honestly think I would have enjoyed more if I'd read it rather than listened to it. And I can honestly say that I think this is the first book that I've found that I felt that way about. There's a lot of emotion to this book and listening to it on audio, I think that I lost some of that emotional connection I would have found if I'd been reading the book to myself. I'm not sure why, but it was something I noticed for the first time when listening to this audio.
And there is a lot of emotion to this book. Sydney lost her entire family, two children and a husband, in a car wreck. When she got involved with her husband, she broke Luke's heart. At the time, she was looking for someone with more ambition and money than Luke brought to the table. It hurt him horribly because Sydney was the girl for him. Now that she's back on the island, he can't resist the allure of her.
I had a hard time with Sydney at times. She broke Luke's heart and so many times throughout the story, it almost felt like she was toying with him. I loved Luke's character and hurt so much for him when she would pull back.
There are several close call/emotional points in this book, but there is one point that I really had an issue with where Sydney put her dog in front of Luke. They are both hurt and I understand why the dog is important to her, but I still think she should put Luke first.
I didn't find this book as riveting as the other two I've listened to in the series, but it was still an entertaining read.
I have read all of Marie's book & I am a huge fan but listening to her books makes the characters come to life & helps my housework go so much quicker. The narrators do a fantastic job with the different character's "voice", never monotone but with depth & emphasis! Love them all, Marie... Keep them coming!!!
Say something about yourself!
I enjoyed Luke and Sydney's history and present. It also was entertaining getting updates on the other characters. I do not care for the narrator who reads instead of performing the story. Monotone delivery.
When Big Mac & Luke were injured.
Flat delivery. No real difference in characters.
I came very close to not getting this book due to a bad review - I AM SO GLAD I WENT WITH MY GUT INSTINCT! This was a very sweet story of two teenage lovers getting a second chance. Luke is there to help Sydney thru a very tough time and she gets to rediscover the one true love of her life.
A light and engaging read that is an integral part of the Gansett Island series. This listen not only tells the story of Luke and Sydney but provides updates and further engagement with many of the characters from previous books. Unfortunately the narration is so bad it sometimes compromises the personality of the characters and detracts from the overall listening enjoyment.
Books are to me what exercising is to those enthusiast. My pleasure is sitting down with a good book, its like" Calgon it takes me away"
Only if nothing else is in your current library.
Luke,very likeable person
No, very monotone. nothing very expressive.
Be very aware of the narrator.
While the story is okay, the narrator drives me nuts. Ms. Fielding doesn't show any of the emotions that are described and doesn't even try to do the male or female voices. It's driving me nuts. I don't think I'll get the rest of the series. I wish they would use Tayna Eby to do the series over again!
