Publisher's summary

Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the New York Times best-sellers Fight Club and Lullaby, is known for his edgy novels, and Rant is no exception. Palahniuk presents this fictional biography of Buster "Rant" Casey in a series of vignettes told by the people who knew him best. As intricate as a spider web, Rant succeeds in recounting the story of one man's life only through the eyes of others. But the question remains, "Who was Rant Casey?"

Critic reviews

"This dark religious parable (there's even a resurrection) from the master of grotesque excess may not attract new readers, but it will delight old ones." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Outrageous but not quite over the top, full of energetic humor, Rant...is a memorable portrait of the cults that gather around authentically different people and a portrait of dystopia that feels unsettlingly contemporary." ( Booklist)

Palahniuk's triumphant sci-fi piece.

I've read Rant thrice. The book is even more amazing with narration. Gives more life to each character.

Give it ten minutes - all will become clear -ish

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved this once I got into it a bit. Totally original in the format and delivery. Hard to even describe except to say I was riveted by the story telling and the character development - wow, what characters.

What did you like best about this story?

The performances were interwoven perfectly.

If you could take any character from Rant out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I loved Echo...so damaged, but brave, and confident, and honest.

Brilliant

Rant Casey? Echo Lawrence? I can’t say I’ve ever of them. No doubt I remember those biblical names.

Faded at the end

Don't get me wrong. It's certainly not a waste of time. I really liked the ensemble cast and find Palahniuk quite imaginative and funny. I was just expecting the book to say more. Part way through I really thought this book had the potential to be great. I felt the end didn't live up to the beginning. Maybe I just didn't get it.

Pretty weird and warped

But that's what Palahniuk fans expect. Buried in amongst all the time loop craziness and the bizarre goings on, is some intriguing insights into just what it is that makes us all the way we are. Palahniuk specializes in creating worlds that are just like ours except that some key features are simply grossly exaggerated. At his best, this forces the reader to look at the world we actually live in in a new way.

Meh

Interesting read. Overall, I thought it was ok. I enjoyed the odd characters and chaotic world, however I had trouble getting into the story. Palahniuk tells this story from tons of different characters but only short bits of text. Definitely a unique narrative mechanism. Again, tricky for me to unravel. I've always loved Palahniuk's brash style. Choke and Fight Club being some of my favorite books. This one though, more of a meh.
