"NOT just for hardcore Ian Fleming Freaks"
Would you consider the audio edition of Quantum of Solace to be better than the print version?

    Yes

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

By design, this collection wasn't edge-of-seat stuff. Better still it kept my BRAIN HAPPY.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Bond in New Yoirk

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No

    Any additional comments?

The incredible Simon Vance goes beyond his already stellar standards in interpreting these miniature, Bomb Bombshells. Just as the stage takes more volume and gestures than the cinema "to project," so did this superb, snarky and sardonic collection yet still...require a little more 'ummmph' from Mr. Vance... precisely because THEY ARE short stories.

    Miraculously good reading.

    "Pleasantly surprised"

Very enjoyable short stories. I was surprised how effective the format was as opposed to linger more complex stories. And Simon Vance was excellent as always.

    "Entertaining and different"

The book was entertaining. Written in the late 50's Early 60's it gives a sence of the time and a different side to James Bond.

    "Not your movie James Bond"

Fleming's writing is lush and detailed, and each of these stories is a quick, fun listen. The proper British narrator sounds perfect, except when he's reading lines from American and Canadian characters, when they sound like they're talking while trying to swallow a lump of chewing tobacco. The stories have very little to do with the movies, and being written almost fifty years ago, keep in mind that they're pretty dated, and blatantly sexist.

    "Meh"

I've read and enjoyed a number of James Bond novels, but I could not get into this at all. I just don't find that the Bond stories work well within a short story format. I was bored throughout.

The narrator does a decent job, but his American accent is laughable.

    "A little dissapointng"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would probably recommend these to someone who is looking for a series of shorts that don't require much attention; as long as they're clear as to what they're getting. You've seen all of these stories as parts of full length James Bond stories. These barely stand on their own as presented and are in need of plot development, character development and closing.

    Story
    "Tight thrillers, dated but great"

I found Ian Fleming to be an unexpectedly good writer; his short stories are tight and the descriptions are beautifully detailed, especially when it comes to setting and location. Even though these stories were written almost fifty years ago, they're still great classic spy thrillers. However, if you're expecting the James Bond of the movies, you'll be disappointed. There are no high-tech gadgets and no superheroics, just pretty straightforward action and espionage (and usually more of the latter than the former). Fleming's Bond is even worse than the movie Bond in his treatment of women, though, so be aware that the books are steeped in unabashed sexism and some racism as well.

These short stories span a lot of Bond's early career. Many of the movies were taken from the names of these stories, but bear no resemblance to them: Bond doesn't even appear at all in the story "Quantum of Solace," for example, except as a listener, and "Octopussy" has no female characters and Bond only appears at the very end.

Fleming's writing quality was a bit up and down; I've liked some of his Bond novels, others not so much. Overall, though, I'd say I think his short stories were some of his best writing.

"Short Stories - not a novel."

For the most part, I didn't get into these short stories. I found that the lack of action made them quite boring. Octopussy was pretty much no action and others were pretty slim also. I got this one after I read Casino Royale, which was awesome and packed with James in danger and fighting his way through the villains. The short stories really didn't have time to develop any characters or a good plot. This was not worth a credit.

"Fun to listen to and smart, too."

I really enjoyed these stories. First one was my least favorite. They improved a great deal after that. Narrator is perfect. Many of them are enough of a mystery to keep you guessing. Really enjoyed it.
