Publisher's Summary

Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can't imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone... until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt’s affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt’s co-workers, Jared fears they'll never find a way to be together—if he can even convince Matt to try. (Meet Matt and Jared again in the audiobook A to Z.)

It was a good book. A solid 4 stars. I wasn't on the edge of my seat in anticipation but I was curious enough in how the plot would play out. The dynamic between the two was interesting enough, if not predictable.

    "Sweet story but TERRIBLE narration!"
What would have made Promises better?

A better narrator. Very honestly, he ruined the entire book for me.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I didn't make it to the end of the book before I lost interest and started a different story.

What didn’t you like about Mark L. Jones’s performance?

No emotion! It sounded like this was the first time he had ever read the book. He was monotone and just terrible.

What character would you cut from Promises?

All charaters were fine - wouldn't cut any.

    Any additional comments?

It is too bad that there wasn't a better narrator. A good narrator could have made this simple, sweet story MUCH more enjoyable and worth the money. Save your money and read the book to yourself.

    "Great Story, Poor Narrator"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Mixed. The story is very moving and romantic. The narrator was so flat that it killed a great deal of the enjoyment. With two male main characters, it is essential that you are able to tell them apart in the narration, but I couldn't. I really would like the the rest of the series on audio, but it is the same narrator, so I think I'm going to pass.

How could the performance have been better?

More inflection, differentiated voices. Better timing. There were no pauses in really important places, like changes from one chapter to the next--though I guess that is the fault of the editor.

"Love the story, not so much the narrator"
What made the experience of listening to Promises the most enjoyable?

I've read the book already, and loved the story.

What did you like best about this story?

Unexpected love is always enjoyable to hear about.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator totally pulled me out of the story. He was rushed, mispronounced words, and had no emotion.

If you could take any character from Promises out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jared, of course. He's so sweet. And I'd love to see his curls.

"Enjoyed the story, the narrator, not so much"
Where does Promises rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Enjoyed the story line, it was funny in parts. I enjoy books that can make me laugh and have enjoyable love scenes.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Mark L. Jones?

The narrator was boring. He read too quickly and when speaking for the different characters, they wasn't any emotion, everyone had the same voice. I won't be able to listen to other books by him. It was just too frustrating.

If you could take any character from Promises out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jared. I love how open and honest he is. He enjoys his family, he's patient and kind.

    "Torn on how to rate"

The narrator was devoid of emotion. That plus his mispronunciation of words (example: heresy), annoyed me greatly.

The story itself was interesting. I felt like one of the MC (Matt) was very self-absorbed and I had difficulty warning up to him. I'll move on to the next book hoping that everything improves.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Nope, a big disappointment because of the narration

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Jared, for sure!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Bad pace, characterizations (everyone sounded the same).

    Any additional comments?

    Buy the book, please.

"Wow! What a Beautifully Told Story!"
    Any additional comments?

Goodness! I thought Matt would never realize if he was gay, straight or bi. My heart just broke for poor Jared.

The great character developments is what made this story so real and I appreciate how hard it was for Matt to come to terms with his feelings for Jared.

This was a very compelling and heartfelt love story.

    "Narrator needs practice"

This is one of my favorite stories, which I have already read 2 or 3 times. I'm glad I had, or I might have rated the purchase much lower. The narrator has a great voice for the character, but he does a very poor job here. First, he does not pause AT ALL - not between characters and not even between changing scenes. It can be very confusing. Secondly, he makes no attempt to vary his narration for different characters. It's not difficult to change tone or phrasing or emphasis to indicate another person is talking. This just feels lazy. Finally, he mispronounce key words: hearsay instead of heresy, etc…

Unfortunately, I love this series so much I purchased all of them before listening. I'm really disappointed that Jones narrates most of the rest of them. Maybe he'll get better. If not, he's going to turn off a lot of listeners to a great author.

    "Stick to the Print"

The book itself was not too bad. Nothing exciting that would set it apart from others in the same genre, but a nice story. The narrator, however, was terrible. I don't know why the decision was made to simply read the story, with no differentiation between characters, but it did not work well. Also, the narrator had a strange inflection that lowered at the end of each sentence, which took a sweet book and made it seem kind of depressing. He did not seem to be familiar with the book, since his tone never seemed to match the material he was reading. Add in the intermittent 70s porn music between the chapters and it made a fingernails on the chalkboard type of grating listening experience. I've read other books by Marie Sexton that I enjoyed, but I would never listen to one of them again on Audible.

"Cute and heart warming, shame about the narration."

Another sweet slow burn of a romance by Marie Sexton. Although some of the secondary characters are a little one dimensional, the story is witty and emotionally sophisticated enough to carry it off. The main characters are charming, their actions and responses to coming out and each other are well written, this book is definitely worth reading. Did you notice how I said read not listen to, thats because the narrator has a weird cadence to his voice at times, his tone would go up when it should have gone down and vise versa.

    "The narrator."

I barely made it 5 min before I closed this "book". There is no emotion or any change in the narrators voice. Pitch and speed are annoyingly constant, and no pauses are taken, and no words are emphasized. When characters are asking questions they sound like statements, and forget about exclamation marks because this narrator is monotonous. The speed (which was too fast by the way) only contributed to the uncomfortable narration. I have read the book on my kindle and wanted a less eye intensive experience, as my eyes have been strained a lot lately, but I simply just can't put up with this audio file. The reader really makes the book come to life when you hear it. This book however was work to listen to. When I read it, it was a pleasure.

    "An interesting listen"

When I first started listening to the book I taught it was going to be one of those typical love stories between two men. Boy was I wrong. What a very great listen between love, sexual interest, violence and battling sexual orientation in a small town. Would definitely listen to it again.
