Publisher's summary

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem.

As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton - and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers - and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry?

Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to hear.

This Heirloom Edition of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies includes a new preface by the author, an afterword by Dr. Allen Grove, professor of English literature at Alfred University, and new scenes of gratuitous zombie mayhem.

Critic reviews

"[Seth Grahame-Smith] has taken the merry world established by a 19th-century literary lady, added a scourge of reanimated corpses, and created...well, a pop cultural phenomenon, certainly, and one that has stirred up a lot of excitement. But the greater achievement of the book may lie in the satisfying desire it awakens to read the remix and the original side by side." ( Entertainment Weekly)

Brains!

This was a pretty fun listen, as long as you already like Jane Austen. I enjoyed this version just as much as I enjoyed the zombieless version, and highly recommend both!

A fun adaptation

I really enjoyed the original and thought that this was an interesting twist to the story. A good listen thought a bit strange at times!

My first introduction to Jane Austin

Wow. I've never read P&P before because I've never been a fan of "classic" literature. (Just because it's old doesn't mean it's good) but this was incredibly fun. Not just the zombies parts either. Grahame-Smith does an amazing job blending his writing with Austin's. Kellgren's narration is spot on. My wife (a big fan of Pride & Prejudice) and I enjoyed this audio book together, something we rarely get to do.

So Fun!

I am an Austen purist and not really into the whole zombie thing and was nervous to venture into the P and P and Zombies but I loved every minute of it. Katherine Kellgren was EXCELLENT and made the book even better. Thoroughly silly and enjoyable!

Katherine Kellgren's narration couldn't be better!

Surprisingly well done! Seth Grahme-Smith does an excellent job respectfully adding a zombie twist to the ever loved, Jane Austen classic PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. With PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES readers can expect Austin’s original tale of 19th Century English society, a great masterpiece, with the added quirky humor of Grahme-Smith’s skillfully infused zombie…*ehem* I mean 'unmentionables' sub-plot. I loved the original sassy battle of the sexes and thoroughly enjoyed this even cheekier “vintage horror” version. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES is truly a fun read and definitely worth a look if you are a P&P fan, or are just looking for a smart laugh.

Not bad.

This one was hard for me to get into. For some reason I just kept...drifting. This is great if you listen to books to help you get through mundane tasks as I often do (gardening, or cleaning, for example). But I didn't find it riveting. Of course I know Pride and Prejudice so I didn't HAVE to follow it closely. As for the violence mingled with Austen's writing style and plot, it is an amusing novelty that wears thin after a while. I didn't find it offensive in the least as many reviewers on here did, I thought it was kind of refreshing...But I can't give it a high rating. Buy it if you want a little something to giggle about, but don't expect too much.

Funny for a Bit

I found the first parts amusing but the novelty wore off half way through.

Good Book, Bad Narrator

The books is good. But the narrator has a highly nasal twang and a high-pitch voice that grates on me.
They should have had two narrators: male and female to more accurately depict the characters.

Loved it!

I can't explain how much I enjoyed this book! I have always loved Pride & Prejudice, so couldn't resist downloading this to see "what he did to it".

It is hilarious, interesting, and - real! The original story is still there, and the addition of the zombies (and necessary changes) just add some fun!

I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates the classics - but likes a twist!

A brilliant new take on a classic

Ha! What to say about this? First off, the premise of the book is hilarious and so well executed. If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice and the paranormal, there is no bad here. I loved all of the humor added in and regularly found myself laughing out loud. The aspects that were changed to include the zombies were brilliant and I loved that the Bennet sisters are all kick ass zombie slayers. And as my review is of the audiobook, I would be remiss if I didn't praise the narration - Katherine Kellgren was outstanding. By far one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I usually only listen to audiobooks of books I've actually read and enjoyed, but was swayed to skip straight to the audiobook of this when I heard a sample, and I think it was definitely the right choice.
