Publisher's summary

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem.

As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton - and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers - and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry?

Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to hear.

This Heirloom Edition of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies includes a new preface by the author, an afterword by Dr. Allen Grove, professor of English literature at Alfred University, and new scenes of gratuitous zombie mayhem.

Critic reviews

"[Seth Grahame-Smith] has taken the merry world established by a 19th-century literary lady, added a scourge of reanimated corpses, and created...well, a pop cultural phenomenon, certainly, and one that has stirred up a lot of excitement. But the greater achievement of the book may lie in the satisfying desire it awakens to read the remix and the original side by side." ( Entertainment Weekly)

Overall pleased

Going into this version is was both nervous, and excited. As a huge Jane Austen fan specifically of Pride and Prejudice I was nervous it would come off poorly. The end product however was quite hilarious. The style while mostly remaining true to the original had its own style which I found highly amusing. This version is much cruder than the original however, and I can't say I liked all the innuendos, but it was all in good fun. In all it was like listening to a funny zombie fanfiction of the book. A well written one, but still lacked the same energy of the original

Enjoyable romp in Jane Austen Land

Any additional comments?

Great idea, even if I originally thought it may be stupid. I was wrong. The author was great weaving in hilarious zombie story into the original Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice. He stayed true to the story except for the zombies. I laughed out loud on several occasions.

The narrator is fantastic!!! She is a worth ready for a Jane Austen world book.

Pride and Prejudice meets zombies

This is actually a fun read for someone who loves the original Pride and Prejudice this was fun to compare to the original what they keep in and what they took out. Just have fun and don't think of it as ruining a classic but a fun spin on one.

Enjoyable

With this title you can guess what to expect. I really enjoyed the narration also.

Spoiler alert
I was a bit disappointed that Mrs Bennet didn't get eaten by zombies and I was really hoping that Mr Collins came to a different end. I was sure this would be highly entertaining but I got enough laughs.

incredible

this book is so good. i personally think pride and prejudice is so boring normally and one of austens worst novels but this makes it more interesting and i care more about darcy this way. (normally i just really hate him and don’t care at all about his story)

Original idea, wears out a bit

I enjoyed the mix of two genres and found the result entertaining. Admittedly, the zombie story doesn't hold a candle to Austin's work with regard to depth: It's a smashing idea that unfortunately wears a bit thin as the story progresses, yet it's still enjoyable right up to the end.
The narrator was excellent, her skill added to the audio book.

Brilliant

I love this book, I have listened to it dozens of times. I miss Kathrine Kellgren. Every time I listen to a book she read, it comes to life and makes me sad she is longer with us.

The novel is brilliant and a creative twist on the classic, anyone who likes a bit a sci-fi in the their classics will love this!!!

fun

I debated about listening to this for years. Purchased on a whim, I became reliuctant to listen. This is a fun book. The reader is great. A delightful book. After listening to this, I wondered if Jane Austen would have written a zombie novel half as much fun!

Familiar yet new

If you love Austen, then this story may not be for you. I like her writing, so I enjoyed the parody of this story. The reader should be familiar with the original because the author makes his own mark by adding scenes and information that is unique to this version. Wickham's fate was deliciously satisfying. Also, I appreciate how Lizzie formed opinions based on a person's skill in the deadly arts. It's a fun romp through zombie- filled England.

Katherine Kellgren - Wow!

I've just finished this zombie version of "P&P", which I loved, and checked all the reviews and links for Katherine Kellgren at Audible. This is the first time I hunted for additional titles by narrator. It feels as though I'm late to discover her. I've never heard such a reader! Bright, precise, compelling torrents of speech delivered with awesome energy and conviction! She projects REAL feeling for Austen's language. In addition, Seth Grahame-Smith did fine work as well, to put the twist on the tale. I hope that other classic titles will receive this kind of clever makeover. I'll be waiting.
