Publisher's summary

In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles (micro-robots) has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed.

And we are the prey.

As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence in a story of breathtaking suspense.

Prey is a novel you can't pause.

Because time is running out.

Critic reviews

"Crichton is the master of the sci-tech thriller, and nowhere is that more evident than in his latest page-turner, a scary, wild ride that is, without a doubt, his best in years." (Booklist)

"From the opening pages of Crichton's electrifying new thriller...readers will know they are in the hands of a master storyteller." (Publishers Weekly)

Classic Crichton

Would you consider the audio edition of Prey to be better than the print version?

Never read the print version so????

What other book might you compare Prey to and why?

None, Crichton stands alone and above.

Which scene was your favorite?

Well the climax, of course, no teasers

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Run, if you can

Any additional comments?

I love Crichton, so im biased, he's the best and no equals

George Wilson is a great narrator.

I really enjoyed this book. The story flows well and kept me listening. It plays out in my mind like a Sci-Fi horror movie, an experiment that goes horribly wrong. I'm a huge fan of Sci-Fi and this book was right up my alley.

Average Book, too much tech jargon.

The author's intro ...well I skipped it, it was long and my eyes were glazing over. But the narrator for the actual book is good
The book was ok, not real exciting. The author spent too much time explaining in painful .details the scientific information. When he got into the story it was good but always interrupted with more painful detail.
If you are a scientist you might like this. If you are looking for a good suspense novel, keep looking, this is not it.

Good narrative, good story, weak on execution

The story is interesting and has good potential. However I found the characters did not seem very believable. Their reactions to various situations (spoiler alert) including very very serious threats was not realistic.
This was my first audio fiction and there certainly were sections where I did not want to press the pause button. The narrative was generally good.

Love the story!

Absolutely love this story. The first person narrative really works. There are good rises in the tension and I was interested in the main characters plight from the get go.

Minor things like being able to occasionally hear the ticking of a watch or the narrator taking gulps of water (which I understand he needed to...just one of those personal pet peeves) were my only qualms. It happened rarely and I would still advise listening to this great story.

Gripping

A great story. Yes, you know from the beginning that the protagonist will survive because the book is written in the first person. Nevertheless it kept my interest all the way to the end.
