Publisher's summary

Hennie Comfort is 86 and has lived in the mountains of Middle Swan, Colorado since before it was Colorado. Nit Spindle is just 17 and newly married. She and her husband have just moved to the high country in search of work. It's 1936 and the depression has ravaged the country and Nit and her husband have suffered greatly. Hennie notices the young woman loitering near the old sign outside of her house that promises "Prayers For Sale". Hennie doesn't sell prayers, never has, but there's something about the young woman that she's drawn to. The harsh conditions of life that each have endured create an instant bond and an unlikely friendship is formed, one in which the deepest of hardships are shared and the darkest of secrets are confessed.

Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale of a friendship between two women, one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of the finest parts of the human spirit.

Absolutely classic story...

This was our first Sandra Dallas novel, and what a good one to discover her with. This time and place was and especially poignant place to depict the development--from scratch--of a rich relationship being built piece by piece. We loved it and have listened to more of her works. Great story.

Pretty good

I was waiting for the ending to be a bigger climax than it was, but it was still satisfying.

Uplifting, clean, great audio performance

Terrific book. Finally, a clean read, it’s actually good. Finally something uplifting instead of depressing. And I can’t say enough about the audio performance. Absolutely fantastic. I’ve heard some people say that this book is predictable, and maybe it is in places, but that didn’t bother me. I felt that the dialogue was extremely authentic and maybe that’s what drew me in the most. But nice gentle arc to the story as well. Loved it.

Guys could - should - will like this too.

I always enjoy novels with a wealth of detail about the historical setting. Without ever being political or polemic, Ms. Dallas paints a detailed picture, or more accurately, creates a fantastic quilt of interrelated vingettes of life in Colorado mining country for women of the last century - the century with years before 1900. Women who coped well with adversity. I recommend that guys enjoy this book and pass it along to their wives, daughters and mothers ... and to the guy in the next cubicle.
