The Maude is outside. It wants to come in. It wants to sit on your chest. The mentally ill patients in Amberly Secure Unit are highly suggestible. A hallucination can spread like a virus. When unexplained power cuts lead to a series of horrifying incidents, fear spreads from the inmates to the staff. Amidst the growing hysteria, AJ, a senior psychiatric nurse, is desperate to protect his charges.
Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is looking for the corpse of a missing woman. He knows all too well how it feels to fail to find a loved one’s body. When AJ seeks Caffery’s help in investigating the trouble at Amberly, each man must face a bitter truth in his own life. Before staring pure evil in the eye.

Riveting, thrilling, creepy.
Jack Caffrey because he is a good man but he has flaws. He is imperfect but moralistic, which sounds strange but it's a successful combination which works and makes him a 'real' character.
Yes. I enjoy his work. He is easy to listen to and all his characters are distinguishable. His accents are excellent and you can get lost in his reading which is how it should be.
I would have loved to have had that luxury. As it was, it was the last thing I listened to before falling asleep and the first thing I reached for on waking up!
I did miss the 'Walking Man' as he is a powerful and wise character. I will wait in anticipation for Mo Hayder's next offering.
"Gripping and terrifying"
I loved Mo Hayder's early novels but have been so disappointed by the most recent ones that it took me a long time to decide to download this one. I am so glad that I did and cannot wait for the next Jack Caffrey. The beginning is so creepy and terrifying that I almost gave up listening but it is this creepiness that entices you in to the characters and the story. It is so excellently constructed that for most of the novel I really did not know where it was going and was constantly surprised. Unlike many current crime novels Hayder does not resort to cliches but uses plot and excellent characterisation to keep you listening. Jot Davies also narrates this excellently and I hope he continues to narrate the Caffrey series.
"Not for the faint hearted !"
In her usual brilliant style another complex plot
With interesting and believable characters
Well researched and very very clever .
Adrenalin producing probably best not listened
To at night if you want to sleep !
"Best not to listen to at night when on your own..."
Mo Hayder's stories scare the beejesus out of me, and still I cannot stop, I just enjoy the scary stuff!
This book doesn't disappoint, and I'm glad I got the audiobook, because the narration is also very very good. From the very beginning, there are two stories intertwined: one, concerning a disappeared person, who sees Jack Caffrey involved from the start, and the other story, taking place in the mental hospital, that slowly creeps into Caffrey's line of work. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the book to other readers, but while I didn't guess the end, I knew that some things "were not as they seemed"... enough said!
Get now yourself scared and listen to Mo Hayder!
"Well worth it, poppet!"
Great story which begins with many different threads and spins them nicely into a compelling story. Great characters, strong plot, a few twists (though I did anticipate the ending (ish))!
Anything else written by Mo Hayder - her work is excellent.
All of them were excellent, particularly OJ.
Get this - you will not be disappointed. Then get more Mo Hayder.
"Mo Hayder strikes again!"
Mo Hayder has pulled it out the bag again, yet another fantastic story, great plot and ..... well Jack Caffrey.... what can i say? fab character. One of my favorites!! Jot Davies is brilliant, highly recommend this!!
"Poppet, You won't want to Stop it!"
I love Mo Hayder's books and this one did not disappoint! I loved the way the story starts with different strands that become intertwined in a complex and compelling story! It gets more and more readable at every twist and turn! I also enjoy that strands and loose ends that link to other books - Jack Caffrey and Flea Marley!
I love the way the complex plot draws together and develops. The interesting and believable characters that you meet along the way, Jack Caffrey... one of my faves! Loved OJ and also the characters in the psychiatric wards.
Jot Davies's was brilliant! I haven't heard her work before but loved this.
It's not for the faint hearted! A few points late at night I had to turn it off as it was too creepy!
one of the best that I have listened to
jack he is always interesting
very good accents
this poppet is a Payne
I thought this was the best yet from mo harder (and I am a fan of her books)
"The second listen even better"
I started from the first book in the series and worked my way through the list. By the time I came to Poppet I had forgotten what happened so listened again.
I really would recommend that anyone interested in this series should start from the first book. Even though you can pick up any and read it all makes more sense and this book was even more enjoyable the second time.
Mo Hayder is a fabulous writer. She is thoroughly entertaining and I think the best one of all in the series is The Treatment.
It was a really unusual story based in a mental ward, but glad I sticked to it. Different story but contained all the usual twist from Mo Hayder. I listen to the audio books when I take the dog for a walk. I walked a lot further when listening to this as I wanted to find out how it ended!!
"Another Mo HAYDER Awesome Novel"
Fantastic imagination and attention to detail, characters that are believable and easy to relate with.
Enjoyed from start to finish.
