Petit pays brought back all of my childhood memories! Vraiment incroyable! Merci Gaël. I wish I could watch the movie too. I’m not sure if it’s showing anywhere in the US but will definitely look.

A deeply moving story which resonates universally

I was riveted by this story. The fully drawn characters, the rich and evocative language, the way the author was able to draw us into the historical context and of course the devastating recounting of the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath. Incredible.

This is a superb reading of a remarkable novel written in French. The author reads it himself. Often a writer is not a very good reader, but this is not the case with Gaël Faye. Because I am not a native speaker I turned down the speed to 80%. This still sounded like a normal conversation but it was easier for me to follow the French. He reads it as a skilled actor would. Between chapters we hear him singing as Gaël Faye is also a singer. There is an interview with him at the end of the novel, which compliment the reading. It is a novel that speaks of many things in Africa. For me, the theme of identity is central, how we form identities by affiliations with groups (language, nationality, skin color) and the benefits (eg community) and horrors (eg war with the “other”) these group affiliations carry within them.

Ce livre est très surfait

Pas d'originalité. Le génocide au Rwanda a le potentiel d'être la toile de fond de nombreuses histoires qui font grande impression, mais ce livre ne me fait pas participer aux événements affreux.

Le narrateur (l'auteur, pas un acteur) est très mauvais. C'est comme il lit un simple récit qu'il n'aime pas.
