Our Spoons Came from Woolworths

Sophia is 21 years old, carries a newt around in her pocket, and marries - in haste - a young artist called Charles. Swept into bohemian London of the thirties, Sophia is ill-equipped to cope. Poverty, babies (however much loved) and her husband conspire to torment her. Hoping to add some spice to her life, Sophia takes up with the dismal, ageing art critic, Peregrine, and learns to repent her marriage - and her affair - at leisure.

But in this case virtue is more than its own reward, for repentance brings an abrupt end to a life of unpaid bills, unsold pictures and unwashed crockery...

    Story
    "Familiar territory"

I read this with a feeling of deja vu. I started married life with very little that wasn't painted to match or given to me and so on. Things are better now, but I found it easy to empathise.

    Story
"A bit of a Marmite offering, love ir or loathe it"
What would have made Our Spoons Came from Woolworths better?

Hard to say; the narrator seemed suited to the story, but it wasn't to my taste

What was most disappointing about Barbara Comyns’s story?

Seemed almost infantile, you could almost think the author believed that babies would be found under gooseberry bushes. Normally I love novels of this era, but this one didn't push any buttons for me.

What didn’t you like about Sophie Ward’s performance?

Gave an impression of immaturity, perhaps that's what was intended.

What character would you cut from Our Spoons Came from Woolworths?

Can't say as I couldn't finish it. A first for me.

    Any additional comments?

Having read the precis of the book, and an account of the author's life, I thought it would be much more interesting than it actually was.

    Story
    "A frustrating story,"

Sadly even though I wanted to enjoy this story, I didn't. I found the storyline of the main character flawed! How can a young woman be so naive and wallow in her own misery. Why didn't she use contraception? Etc....
