Wonderful!

The story, characters, and a child's view of small town 1961 held me dear.

Loved this story

I really enjoyed all the characters of the story, and all the ways in which different lives were touch by the pastor and his gracious ways. The story set you back to the days life was much more simple. Great read.

exquisite writing

This is an excellent book. The writing is descriptors and detail are exquisite. He uses phrasing I've never heard. I didn't roll my eyes once from the overused verbiage and descriptors I've gotten so use to. It was so easy to envision each scene. Character development is complex, layered and yet simple. I gave it 4 stars only because if the predictable ending.

Interesting and uplifting

Although, I'm not very religious, I really enjoyed this book. It is not overly preachy. The story is interesting, the characters are complex, and I found myself weeping at times, and reaching for my journal to write certain beautifully turned-out sentences.

Lovely and thoughtful

This was a great story, written and performed amazingly well. It’s told through the eyes of a 13 year old boy as he’s looking back 40 years later. It’s a wonderful growing up too soon type story, and gives an incredibly accurate representation of small-town life in a time of crisis.

Towards the middle, it did seem to have too many characters - but as the story moves on, they are all important to the flow and development. It can be a bit slow and thoughtful at times, but I appreciated being allowed to meander through the plot points with the characters. I also appreciated how the epilogue wraps up many of these named characters nicely.

I felt the relationships were written in a very authentic way. The way that the brothers interact, and how the various couples behaved felt genuine and real. There are also gorgeous descriptions of the landscape that really painted a clear picture for me.

Themes woven though the story include forgiveness, familial relationships and bonds, and how we choose to love (or hate) each other. The narration is excellent, so much that I found myself feeling like I was having a conversation with a friend.
