Publisher's summary

Adam March is a self-made “Master of the Universe”. He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting—until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam’s sister has been missing for decades...that she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind...and that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose.

Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he’s worked so hard to achieve. He doesn’t believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service.

But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance. Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He’s been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance’s unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam. What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other—in ways they never could have expected.

Critic reviews

"Chance tells his story in his own words, which makes his mistreatment and return to the fighting pit powerfully disturbing. Combined with Wilson's unflinching portrayal of Adam's struggle to overcome his past, Old Yeller's got nothing on this very good man and his dog story." ( Publishers Weekly)

Must love dogs

You must love dogs to like this book, but if you do, you’ll be taken in by it. Not a masterpiece, but a good listen.

Heartwarming

Tough and intense, main character loses it all and more. Volunteering and a dog help him to change.

A Good Read for Rescue Parents

The book doesn’t show you all the happy sides of folks who say they will never have a dog, the rescuers who give their hearts to saving animals, or those who are no friend to any animal. But it does show a well-written story along the lines of who rescued who, and the bond between a dog and his person.

THIS SHOULD BE A MOVIE

Would you listen to One Good Dog again? Why?

I HAVE LISTENED TO IT TWICE AND WILL LISTEN TO IT AGAIN

What was one of the most memorable moments of One Good Dog?

I DONT WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NOT READ IT YET

Which scene was your favorite?

I DONT WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NOT READ IT YET

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

IT MADE ME DO BOTH.. I LAUGHED AND CRIED.. BECAUSE THE REALITY OF IT ALL IS THERE IS DOG FIGHTING AND EVIL IN THE WORLD AND THATS NOT FICTION.

Any additional comments?

LOVED THE NARRATOR.. LOVED THE STORY.. IF IT WERE A MOVIE I WOULD PAY TO SEE IT TWICE.

Good but not as good as her other books.

The main character (person not dog) wasn't easy to care about until at least halfway through the book. Then he slowly grew on me. The dog, of course, was loveable from the start.

A Good Dog Story

What disappointed you about One Good Dog?

I was not disappointed in the least by this story--excellent story without all the graphic detail that could have been included. I'm very grateful it wasn't because it wasn't needed and would have taken away from the message of the story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I love Sophie Kinsella and I want something a bit lighter so I'm going with one of her books!

How could the performance have been better?

Nothing could have been improved upon.

What character would you cut from One Good Dog?

Can't think of one.

Tear Jerker if you own a dog

Loved the story, although some is predictable. I liked that the story gave the dog’s perspective on his master too. Adam was a believable character.
