Publisher's summary

Adam March is a self-made “Master of the Universe”. He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting—until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam’s sister has been missing for decades...that she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind...and that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose.

Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he’s worked so hard to achieve. He doesn’t believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service.

But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance. Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He’s been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance’s unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam. What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other—in ways they never could have expected.

Critic reviews

"Chance tells his story in his own words, which makes his mistreatment and return to the fighting pit powerfully disturbing. Combined with Wilson's unflinching portrayal of Adam's struggle to overcome his past, Old Yeller's got nothing on this very good man and his dog story." ( Publishers Weekly)

If you have ever loved a dog...

This book digs at my heart, much like "The Art of Racing in the Rain" and "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle." Susan Wilson truly understands the bond between dogs and humans--at least from this human's point of view. I love dogs, I love this book.

A Good Tail!

This is a story that could be saccharine in someone else's hands, but Susan Wilson's characterizations really bring the story to life. She has a sharp eye for detail and her main characters are quite believable. Narrator Fred Berman is impressive! I enjoyed the listen a lot and actually have purchased the written version of the book for family members who aren't yet audiophiles.

Story of Redemption

A battered man and a battered dog find each other as each of their lives are taking a new uncertain direction. I loved to see Adam turn from a pompous selfish man into a vulnerable loving person who redeemed himself with his daughter and his past . Chance's narrator really captured his personality. I loved the bond of Adam and Chance. I enjoyed every minute!

"One Good Dog" is an unexpected gem.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If you are a dog owner or have had a dog in the past, you need to read this book. It takes a while to get into the book, but it is well worth it. The ending is as good as I would have expected.

Makes You Think About Your Priorities

This was an excellent story told in s most creative way. You enjoy meeting both main characters and sometimes debate who to root for. In the end, you reflect on your own set of priorities and what is important in life. Excellent read (listen).

Funny, heartbreaking, and an all-around good read.

I inhaled this book, simply couldn't put it down. The storyline and characters were compelling, and the narrators were outstanding. I look forward to reading this book again.

All Dogs Are Good Dogs!

A slow start but keep going...it is worth it. I really liked the alternating voices of man and dog for the chapters in the telling of the story from the perspective of each. Both personalities are very much alike and life experiences sort of parallel to each other (although for the poor dog it is more physical...and the breed really gets a "bum rap"). Happy ending after a sad and scary interlude.

What a sweet story!

A story about what a difference a dog can make in your life. I was never a dog person until that one special dog came into my life and could read me like a book. Rescue dogs are the best, they know how lucky you are to have found each other.
