"Great addition to a very good series."

I started listening to the "Ice" series with book three and was hooked, so I went back -- started with book one through book five and actually thought that the series was finished. I was surprised to see audiobook six for sale yesterday and immediately downloaded and listened. This is another great book in the series - a classic Anne Stuart omega or anti-hero, a well thought out and realistic plot, character development and unconventional romance - not a stereotypical "they see each other and 50 pages in, they are in love". As with many of this author's books, the reader is not really certain they should like the main male character - the hero, because he may not actually be a hero, he certainly has flaws. This is a good story. Although this book can be read alone, integration of several characters from earlier novels into the story line make the story line interesting and someone who has read the earlier novels would have a greater appreciation for the plotline and earlier characters' involvement. This series has had a number of narrators, all of whom I liked, Xe Sands does a great job with both female and male voices, accents, pauses and speed. I will go back and listen to the five earlier audiobooks.

"Weak on motivations. Too much telling no showing."

But good for emotional appeal and sensuality. It may fit your mood.

This was supposed to be romantic suspense. But the suspense was off stage. It was told more than shown. For example. Barringer (the main bad guy) was too conveniently all knowing. Finn was kidnaped and held for three years in the South American mountains. How would Barringer know that Finn would escape now and go to specific towns? How did he know Finn was planning to stay a few days in a specific country house? How would Barringer know Finn believed Madsen was responsible for his kidnaping and was planning to kill Madsen. The truth was Thomason was responsible. Barringer also changed his motivations midstream which did not make sense. He wanted to kill one guy. Then later decided to forget that and kill another just because the other avoided being captured by his men. Then we have Finn. Several times we are told Finn killed bad guys but we did not see the action (the movements, the feelings, the dialogue, how it happened).

Ok so don’t expect well thought out motivations and suspense. But the overall plot was good. There is more pondering than normal, but the author does pondering well.

The best parts of this book are two sex scenes. Boy does this author know how to write sex scenes. They are full of passion and sensuality. I loved them. Finn was so sexy and dreamy. And the narrator definitely added to the allure.

    Genre: romantic suspense

    "Love Anne Stuart"
Would you listen to On Thin Ice again? Why?

I'll definitely listen to this audiobook again. In fact I've just finished it and will be starting over at the beginning as soon as I've done here. It is the perfect mix of suspense and - though I hesitate to use the word - romance.

What other book might you compare On Thin Ice to and why?

Of all of Anne Stuarts books this one reminds me most of Ruthless. The hero/antihero...is not as heartless as some of her protagonists.

Which character – as performed by Xe Sands – was your favorite?

I have to say - odd as it may be - that Dylan was my favorite character. Xe Sands is EXCELLENT...and is definately in my top 5 narrators. I live with a teenage boy - and Xe had the breed down perfect in her narration of him.

    "Excellent combo"

The Anne Stuart / Xe Sands duo is an outstanding connection.

Notice to all directors seeking performers for a romantic male Irish accent: Xe Sands is your narrator.

The story itself is a bit too violent for my tastes, but I will admit to having quite a low threshold for violence. Despite this shortcoming for me personally, Anne Stuart is a master at creating a good story.

    "Awesome Performance, Awesome Book!"
If you could sum up On Thin Ice in three words, what would they be?

    A Fantastic Read!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Finn MacGowan. He's got this incredible sexy laid back swag about him. He tries to convey this nonchalance attitude like he doesn't care....please..I saw through that facade to so fast. I could literally see Finn falling in love and I loved his protectiveness of "Sister Beth" and Dylan.

What does Xe Sands bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think she brings the characters to life. The emotions that comes across in her voice when she reads..I mean, it's phenomenal. I think she's a perfect fit to the audiobook and I for one don't understand why she didn't narrate all of them but...I guess that's a question for another day.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

(Without sounding too cheesy) My tagline would be: Ice cracks and melts away, but true love lasts a lifetime. (needs work I know but we're going to leave it at that)

    Any additional comments?

Oh yes, the additional comments. I came into the Ice series smack in the middle. I started with "Blue Ice" and loved it. I have a habit of reading the summary and the other readers/listeners comments and obsessing over it and analyzing it turning it upside down and inside out until I'm satisfied that I want to spend my money or my credit. (I'm so anal it's not even funny) So after "Blue Ice", I purchased the first book of the series and started from there until I got to "On Thin Ice" and I'm so glad did. I really liked the fact that previous characters were re-visted. I just wished Xe Sands had narrated from the beginning of the series...not to say that the other narrators in the previous books weren't good because they were but when I got to "Fire and Ice" and heard her voice...that was it...I was hooked. I was extremely happy to see that she narrated this one too. I really hope this isn't the end. It is a fantastic series!

The last thing I want to comment on is this...I mentioned that I do read the comments of previous listeners to see how they liked the book and I read a comment that really was uncalled for. To actually call somebody "puke in a bucket" is horrendous and saying that she needs another profession definitely wasn't called for. I thought it was hurtful and very mean spirited. There is a way to write a negative comment without being mean. It's called (lets all say it together) constructive criticism. It almost sounds you have some kind of malicious intent toward this narrator and I really hope that Ms Sands didn't read that because..that had to have hurt. I know that's your opinion and you have right to express your opinion and you are entitled to your opinion. The only thing I'm saying is there is a right way and a wrong to say things about people and in my opinion you chose the wrong way. Words affect people...what you say to people affects them in ways you probably don't understand because if you did, you wouldn't have put that out there like that. Just choose your words the next time, that's all I ask. Ask yourself, "would I like it if someone said this about me", "how would I feel if someone said that about me". Just something to think about that's all.
    *stepping down from soapbox*

"Too much romance and very little action"

I was very disappointed with this book, I really enjoyed the Ice series but this one, last one for me, was boring. When I start running errands and answer calls and talking with other people while I am listening to a book; i know I made a bad choice. The narrator was so slow and boring that a few times actually put me to sleep. Anyway, this is not a book for me, When I buy action books, I am hoping to actually get action, not romance...

    "A great escape!"

I enjoyed this novel very much, in spite of its obvious problems. For me, this book was the same kind of escapist fun as "Romancing the Stone".

It was fairly well written, but not very well edited. Ms. Stuart is clearly an experienced and skilled writer, but she needed editorial help with some internal inconsistencies. There was also enough cliche in her dialogue to become distracting at points.

The narrator was able to portray the different characters convincingly with the possible exception of the scene with "the bull"; although, I am not sure this was her fault since that scene was so contrived.

Overall, this was a flawed but very enjoyable book.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    bored housewife

What could Anne Stuart have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

never plan on reading any of her books again

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

the repetitive references to sex was more than any story or intrigue to follow

    Any additional comments?

story was terrible - I listen for a couple of hours but it was about the guy getting laid - waste of credit!

Would you listen to On Thin Ice again? Why?

No way could I ever listen to this book again unless it was narrated by someone else.

What other book might you compare On Thin Ice to and why?

    Can't think of one.

What didn’t you like about Xe Sands’s performance?

There is not enough words or space to express them. In over 700 books on tape she is the worst narrator I have ever listened to. Nails on the chalk board has more appeal. Almost monotone and attempting to be sexy she comes across as puke in a bucket.
I loved the book but it took all my effort to finish it. Sorry to say Xe, you need a new profession.

If you could take any character from On Thin Ice out to dinner, who would it be and why?

    I enjoyed them all

    Any additional comments?

I will enjoy many Anne Sturat books in the future but absolutely will not purchase one narrated by Xe.
