Publisher's summary

Joe Pickett's in his last week as the temporary game warden in the town of Baggs, Wyoming, but there have been strange things going on in the mountains, and his conscience won't let him leave without checking them out: reports of camps looted, tents slashed, elk butchered. And then there's the runner who simply vanished one day.

Joe doesn't mind admitting that the farther he rides, the more he wishes he could just turn around and go home. And he is right to be concerned. Because what awaits him is like nothing he's ever dealt with, like something out of an old story, except this is all too real and too deadly. When he'd first saddled up, he'd thought of this as his last patrol. What he hadn't known was just how accurate that thought might turn out to be.

He's game: solve another mystery with Joe Pickett.

Critic reviews

"Box inexorably builds Joe's harrowing personal quest into a complex meditation on human greed and government corruption. A lone black wolf, possibly Box's symbol for the wilderness within and without the human soul, tracks Joe throughout this terrible, beautiful tale of courage and compassion and culpability." ( Publishers Weekly)
" Nowhere to Run, the tenth in the series, ranks with his best books....Readers should take note of their surroundings before opening this book: once they start reading, they won’t know what hit them." ( Booklist)

Gory, but was needed to tell the story!

Very good listen! My husband and I enjoyed it very much! Gory, and very descriptive details in some parts, but needed to portray the story and the plot. Well written and well read. Thanks for a nice series. Exciting and entertaining.

Libertarian Alert

Wonderful story that captures the encroachment of government over the freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of its citizens. Entertaining while thought provoking.

Nowhere to run

Story was always moving. It made one feel he was in the mountains with the other people. I could easily put myself in Joe Pickett’s place.

The Best Yet

As a Wyoming born and raised and now a 70+ yr old retired Law Enforcement guy I have enjoyed all of Joe Pickett's adventures. This one is the Best. I don't know how C.J. keeps coming up with great stories.

WOW

there were some parts in the beginning of this book that were pretty hard to swallow and I had a hard time getting through it. but the story absolutely hits home in this day and age. a lot of us wonder what our country is coming to, what we might be losing, how can we let this happen. we rail against the monster our government has become. a lot of us are struggling like Joe Pickett to be good citizens but still want to maintain our freedom. CJ box has his finger on a pulse that I hope is much larger than anyone realizes because it's the only thing that's going to save this country

Where are Americas Underground Peole

In addition to providing the mystery, suspense, action and place of setting this novel also was thought provoking about where our government is headed verses rights for privacy and wanting to live off the land. I'm just an ordinary suburban dweller, but it made me think about those people that enjoy subsistence living.
