Publisher's Summary

Comfortable in his new life in Deer Run, young Ruben Beeler is called away by Marshal Marion Daniels to help in an investigation of murder and mutilation north of St. Joe. That begins a search for killers and leads the men northward into unfamiliar territory, pitting them against a family of outlaws who have ruled Nodaway County since before the Civil War.

Push comes ta shove right smart, an' things git hot an' heavy quick, as even Rube, an' Marion, an' Homer, out numbered an' outgunned, take to the dodge. It comes to be some desperate for all of 'em afore they git off the Nodaway Trail.

David Lewis' writing will stand up with the best western books ever written. How does it get any better than this--well he reads his books with a style that makes them even better and more memorable. These are classic tales that never drag.

Besides incessant listening to audiobooks, I also read on my Kindle at night, birdwatch, garden (roses, daylilies), and do genealogy.

"The Gunsmith or the Mule? Gotta Love Them Both!"

I cannot think of a more fun and enjoyable series. I am fixin' to listen to every one of them! And I do not say that lightly or for any other author or series.

Lewis narrates his own books, at least in this series he does. Nobody could do it better than he does. And I do not say that lightly, either.

Start with Book 1, Deer Run Trail. See my review of it on June 27, 2016. This one, The Nodaway Trail, Book 2, is just as good, maybe even a tad better. They are all back--young Reuben, Marion, and Homer. Don't forget Reuben's sweetheart, Harmony. Add a full cast of good guys and bad guys. Add another "trail trip", with lots of laughs, shoot-em-ups, taking care of business (both kinds), lots of bacon, biscuits, and beans, the two Arlisses (the gunsmith AND the mule), and you will have a listening experience that can't be surpassed. Trust me!

You owe it to yourself to try this series. If you have any sense of humor at all and you enjoy being entertained by audiobooks, this series can't be beat (in my humble opinion.) You don't have to be a fan of westerns, you just need to be a little fun-loving or adventurous.

Not for the pure of language or for those who hate swearing of any kind, even the smallest bit.

I give this series, at least Books 1 and 2, my highest recommendation. C'mon, you gotta have some fun once in a while!

I enjoy counter-terrorism, westerns, historical fiction, detective mysteries, and old school comedy like "A Christmas Story".

"Loved it! Already listened 3 times."

Makes my mouth water listening to the simple home cooked meals either eaten on the trail or in the small town café: chicken and dumplings, corn bread, fried chicken, beef steak, ham and eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, catfish, etc.. I grew up eating simple yet delicious home cooked southern meals steeped in beans and greens seasoned with pork meats.

I want to strap on the six shooters and carry the sawed off shotguns to bring the brutal outlaws to justice. I admire his saving the weak and innocent. If you think it's OK to help the weak, even if it means being the only law in a lawless land, against overwhelming odds, you will enjoy this book and other in the series: great heroic gunfight scenes. The protagonist is a simple, polite, innocent young man who cares about right and wrong and has the skills to stand up against wrong and fight for right. I loved it. But maybe I'm to be considered a chump. I was a Boy Scout as a child and grew up watching black and white TV of the 50's and 60's such as "The Rifleman" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive". I volunteered to serve as an officer in the Marine Corps during the last 4 years of the Vietnam war, influenced by watching "Combat" as a child. Yes, I'm a idealistic person but I have a soft spot for the strong who stand up for the weak.I loved this story. I recommend highly.

"As good an audiobook as you can find"
Would you consider the audio edition of Nodaway Trail to be better than the print version?

Audio - having the author read brings the characters to life exactly how their meant to be. Lewis has great vocal range and delivery. Better than any reading I've heard and that's after listening to all the Song of Ice and Fire series, The Millennium trilogy and countless other books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughed plenty, maybe cheered some when alone in the car...

    Any additional comments?

Lewis' Trail series are the only books I'll listen to over and over. And all my friends who've listened to them do the same thing... The stories have a great flow, no dragging on at any point and develop highly relatable characters. They're tough people in a hard era of life in a relatively young and unsettled American midwest. If you have a problem with the OCCASIONAL swear word, go read/listen to children's books. If you want great stories that depict life in the wilds of Missouri as it really was and how it really sounded, these books are unparalleled.

Just what I expected. Another great piece of work from David Lewis. Not only does he tie the story together from Deer Run but he adds some excellent emotion to the list of great work. His performance for the list of characters was really great.

"Only one negative point I know of."
Which character – as performed by David R. Lewis – was your favorite?

I enjoyed all the characters and David's ability in making them all so individual each with different traits.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Reminded me that there are many times we need to be lighthearted and enjoy each other.

    Any additional comments?

As I see this author, David R. Lewis, as a gifted author bring the story and individuals to life, an yet chose to use our Lords name in vain so frequently bothered me. Slang at times can be used ok in stories for emphasis and humor without using the Lords name in vain. I do appreciate this author and enjoy his story lines greatly. Keep up the good work maybe without using our Lords name in vain.

"book is nicely presented by reader/auther."

I have listened to all of the Trail series twice. While the stories a very good, it's the reading done by the author that makes the listen great. I have laughed out loud at many of the different slang terms the charters use through out the book. Hope Mr Lewis has more of these stories coming.
    I guess that I am a fan.

"Arliss the mule steals the show"
    Any additional comments?

Good writing, great story, and fantastic narration. This series gives you a good idea of what life was like in the late 1800s out on the range. There's something for everyone except kids as it does have a little swearing in it. Arliss the mule adds a lot of smiles to the story. I love the series and I plan to continue. You should give it a go.

This is a very interesting story with authentic sounding language of the time. It makes you feel like you're riding along with the marshals as they go after the bad guys.
