His secret could win the war for the Allies, unless the Nazis get to him first...
In the brutal chaos of the Second World War, three people find their lives inextricably interwoven in a web of courage, betrayal and love: Julie Lescaux, the young Englishwoman caught up in one of the most dangerous operations of the French Resistance; Paul Vasson, vicious Paris pimp turned Nazi collaborator; David Freymann, German scientist caught up in unimaginable horror, destined to lose everything except his faith in his own discovery.

This is a beautifully written book with rich characterisation and a compelling plot. I really wanted to know what happened to the two main protagonists but I found the tale a little overlong and at times I felt it dragged. However the first class narration by Robert Powell kept me going and I was glad I did.
This is a tale of war and adversity and the search for meaning and truth but it does not preach - it sweeps us along a thrilling path to a satisfying conclusion.
Well worth the effort.
I love books!
I've been reading/listening to Clare Francis' books for a long time. She's an English author and one aspect of her life that has always stood out to me is that in her younger days she once sailed solo across the Atlantic, London to New York. Not being a sailor myself I can still appreciate what an amazing feat that was. In this book, she uses that sailing knowledge quite a bit. This book is a classic Worl War II novel. The author weaves a tale with three main characters; a German scientist that is Jewis and works on secret radar projects, a low life Frenchman that becomes a Nazi colablorator/informant and a young English single mom that moves to France in the late 1930's and becomes part of the French resistance. The author starts the story by giving you the background on the three main characters then slowly weaves the tale bringing them all together. By the time I was halfwy through the book I was totally engrossed and it was a page turner. I do believe this book is the author's best work.
I found the story line to be gripping for most of the time. I just felt that it was a little drawn out. Liked the way all the different characters came together.
This isn't a great book. It's a Summer kind of read - fun, well-written, easy to listen
I enjoyed his narration
"An epic story above all"
This book is a complex story with three strands. Each could be a tale on its own. The details have been very carefully researched and reflect much of what happened during the time of the book. A long listen that will have you enthralled and not wanting to stop listening.
I thoroughly recommend it to everyone.
