Publisher's summary

The best-selling master of historical fiction weaves a grand, sweeping drama of New York from the city's founding to the present day.

Rutherfurd celebrates America's greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga that showcases his extraordinary ability to combine impeccable historical research and storytelling flair. As in his earlier, best-selling novels, he illuminates cultural, social, and political upheavals through the lives of a remarkably diverse set of families.

As he recounts the intertwining fates of characters rich and poor, black and white, native born and immigrant, Rutherfurd brings to life the momentous events that shaped New York and America: the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the trials of World War II, the near-demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the '90s, and the attacks on the World Trade Center. Sprinkled throughout are captivating cameo appearances by historical figures ranging from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to Babe Ruth.

New York is the book that millions of Rutherfurd's American fans have been waiting for. A brilliant mix of romance, war, family drama, and personal triumphs, it gloriously captures the search for freedom and prosperity at the heart of our nation's history.

Critic reviews

"Like James Michener and Leon Uris, Rutherfurd does a magnificent job of packaging a crackling good yarn within a digestible overview of complex historical circumstances and events." (Booklist)

"History has never been so fun to read.... Rutherfurd's research is exhaustive...fun.... This is history, but with a very readable story line." (USA Today)

Beautiful, Historical, Entertaining!

Great book! I highly recommend it. The author takes a fictitional family through several generations and places them within true historical events. Loved the book. Very entertaining!

Splendid, fascinating

As he did with The Forest, Rutherford brings the reader in to a compelling story by using real people, mixing known historical events with individual narratives. Always interesting and informative.

The narrator is a good actor, making the characters believable and moving. He doesn’t know how to pronounce Bernstein, but otherwise he did a great job.

An epic that I wished would never end!

The legacy of New York had never been presented better than in this clever history lesson told through the eyes of generations. Mark Bramhall performed a Herculean feat in capturing the accents and vocal nuances of the many characters presented in over 400 years of history.

So impressed by the narration!

I've listened to at least 100 titles and this reader is very impressive! He held my attention, and was super believable in the characterization of the voices. The story itself got a little deep into politics at some points, but overall, hard to stop listening to. loved it!

Extraordinary!

First and foremost, Rutherfurd has created an epic novel capturing 400 years of New York history in such a fashion, I would forget for a moment I was reading historical fiction. I found myself doing more research on certain events and jotting notes! Now as for Mark Bramhall’s narration, extraordinary! His accents of Dutch, Italian, French, English, Puerto Rican, Irish, Jewish were perfect (including the Sadder prayer in Arabic) Nothing seemed beyond his articulate grasp-stuffy old men, courageous young women, innocent children. I have never been more impressed with a narration.
I recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!

I savored every page!

This is my first Edward Rutherfurd novel and it definitely won't be my last! It takes a commitment to read a book of this length, but I savored every page. The characters are so rich that I felt like I knew them. Thanks to Rutherfurd's dynamic plot, I learned a great deal about America's history and especially about the Big Apple. I wish he wouldn't have included the epilogue... it was unnecessary and deflated what would have otherwise been a powerful ending.
