Publisher's summary

Under the streets of London there's a world most people could never even dream of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, and pale girls in black velvet. Richard Mayhew is a young businessman who is about to find out more than he bargained for about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his safe and predictable life and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and yet utterly bizarre.

There's a girl named Door, an Angel called Islington, an Earl who holds Court on the carriage of a Tube train, a Beast in a labyrinth, and dangers and delights beyond imagining.... And Richard, who only wants to go home, is to find a strange destiny waiting for him below the streets of his native city.

Critic reviews

"Prose that dances and dazzles.... Gaiman describes the indescribable." (Susanna Clarke)

"It's virtually impossible to read more than ten words by Neil Gaiman and not wish he would tell you the rest of the story." (Observer)

"Much too clever to be caught in the net of a single interpretation." (Philip Pullman)

Exceptional!

I loved this book when I read it the first time, so much so that I read it at least one more time after that. The audio book with Neil Gaiman’s narration was a pleasure. I highly recommend it!

Great author, not a voice actor

interesting story. would have benefited by being narrated by an actor rather than the author. the cheap audio effects distract from the story.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD TO DISCOVER

One of the pleasures of life is to discover a terrific new book/writer. I have only just come across Neil Gaiman and then to download this book with the author narrating was a double pleasure. A work of incredible imagination which uses history, culture through the ages, religious icons and the London Underground to weave a true tale of fantasy, an alternative parallel universe under the feet of people in the city. Leaves many erstwhile fantasy writers books dead in their tracks. The author brings each of his characters to life with subtle inflections of voice, I will certainly try his other works. Do yourself a treat and listen or read you won't be disappointed.

Never disappointed with Neil Gaiman.

Would you consider the audio edition of Neverwhere to be better than the print version?

No, I really enjoyed listening to this narrator's interpretation of the book. I was sorry when it ended

What does Neil Gaiman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Listening to books on audio is a return to the days of childhood when someone read a story for you. The personality that can be put into the read itself enriches the story immeasurably.

If you could rename Neverwhere, what would you call it?

London Under

Brilliant, imaginative fantasy

What Neil Gaiman has done is create another version of London - one which is full of the fantastic - just beyond what we can see. Neverwhere is an epic feat of imagination wonderfully narrated by the author, who is a masterful storyteller. Loved it.

Neil Gaiman at his best!

Where does Neverwhere rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

hmm, it's up there with all my favourites. I would read this again and again!

What did you like best about this story?

I didn't see the twist coming! He had me fooled all the way. Satisfying ending!

Which character – as performed by Neil Gaiman – was your favorite?

I loved Hunter. And Islington. Listen, and you'll find out why.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but why the heck would I give it away? That's for the listeners to find out!

Any additional comments?

Some have said this is not true Neil Gaiman style, but I have to disagree. Perhaps the protagonist of this book reminded me of the protagonist in Gaiman's novel 'Anansi boys', but it didn't detract from the novel, only made him more predictable in the sense that I knew where he would end up at the finish.

For another great read/listen of Gaiman's, tuck into 'The Graveyard Book', it's a good'un!

Brilliant to hear this read by the author

What made the experience of listening to Neverwhere the most enjoyable?

Being sucked right in Neil Gaiman's world along with the writer and hearing his imagining of the world and the characters. His character voices were amazing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Richard. He is a sympathetic character and a wonderful audience identification character because we are experiencing a new world along with him. I cheered him on in his heroic moments and wanted to hug him in his moments of despair.

Have you listened to any of Neil Gaiman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have never listened to any of Neil Gaiman's performances before, but would definitely listen to more after this. He reads beautifully and has a lovely voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, several, particularly moments when Richard was despairing and alone in the world. It was easy to be moved by his plight thanks to Neil Gaiman's wonderful reading and the power of his writing.

Classic Neil Gaiman

After listening to “The Graveyard Book” I was hopeful that “Neverwhere” would be as good. I was not disappointed, Gaiman has a brilliant mind and tells a ripping good yarn.

Leave it to the professionals

I have no idea what the story is like on account of being so distracted by the bad narration. I wish Mr. Gaiman would leave narration to the professionals who can really bring his characters to life.
