Publisher's summary

Nefertiti and her younger sister, Mutnodjmet, have been raised in a powerful family that has provided wives to the rulers of Egypt for centuries. Ambitious, charismatic, and beautiful, Nefertiti is destined to marry Amunhotep, an unstable young pharaoh. It is hoped by all that her strong personality will temper the young Amunhotep's heretical desires.

From the moment of her arrival in Thebes, Nefertiti is beloved by the people. But as she turns her attention to producing a son, she fails to see those plotting against her husband's rule. The only person wise enough to recognize the shift in political winds is Mutnodjmet. Observant and contemplative, Mutnodjmet has never shared her sister's desire for power. Her greatest hope is to share her life with the general who has won her heart. But as Nefertiti learns of the precariousness of her reign, she declares that her sister must remain at court and marry for political gain, not love. To achieve her independence, Mutnodjmet must defy her sister while also remaining loyal to her family.

Love, betrayal, political unrest, plague, and religious conflict: Nefertiti brings ancient Egypt to life in vivid detail. Fast-paced and historically accurate, it is the dramatic story of two unforgettable women living through a remarkable period in history.

Critic reviews

"Beautifully written and completely engrossing." ( Library Journal)
" Nefertiti is a fascinating window into the past, a heroic story with a very human heart. Compulsively readable!" (Diana Gabaldon)
"Though sometimes big events are telegraphed, Moran...gets the details just right, and there are still plenty of surprises in an epic that brings an ancient world to life." ( Publishers Weekly)

Not What I Expected

The story develops very slowly and the writing is not very exciting. I was able to finish listening to it, but barely.

Facinating!!

Facinating, engrossing and obsessive! These are all adjetives that I'm using to describe this book! Especially, the obsessive, as I couldn't stop thinking about the story and it's characters, between 'listenings'. The narration was terrific, very engaging and I'll look for more by this narrator. And, I will most certainly look forward to the author's next book!

Moran never disappoints!

The cultural details were my favorite part of the book, from the make-up to the architecture, it was fascinating. I did have to take a break in the middle because I find reading about mad kings tiresome as well as the relationship between the two sisters. I quickly came back to it and was quite pleased with the ending.

Couldn't stop listening

I really was captured by this book. It gave an interesting perspective on ancient Egyptian times and culture. I wish they had given more information at the very end about what happened to some of the main characters, and why the author wrote their stories differently. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Historical Fiction Is Beautiful

True there is a lot of creative liberty within the pages of this book but with so little information about this period in history and how difficult it can be to piece the puzzle together, I would say this author did a fantastic job. I very much enjoy reading fiction that takes place in this era but more so, I enjoy reading everyone's interpretations of the data that has been collected. We will never know the personalities of the people who are featured in this book.
I was glad this story was told from the point of view of Nefertiti's sister. She is named Mutnedjemet in this book but I have heard her named as Mutbenret before as well. Either way I appreciated how Michelle Moran bridged the gaps in history with her interpretation. This book feels very Other Boleyn Girl in some ways but I would prefer to think of this story on it's own. All in all, I loved it. I recommend listening to this one before The Heretic Queen.
