©2006 Carl Hiaasen; (P)2007 BBC Audiobooks Ltd.
Bought it because I like William Roberts and outdoors and kayaking are subjects I like reading about. But it was a big mistake.
Characters were dull and brutish, humour was dim and crude, not really anything original or engaging or redeeming about it and absolutely no incentive to keep listening after a quarter of the way through. Just a bunch of dim-witted thugs blundering around in Florida.
If you know and like the author go ahead; if you think - like me - it might be an entertaining story set in the everglades, with a bit of amateur crime solving and hide and seek in kayaks, give it a big wide miss.
Although funny from the beginning, and love the narrator, was sometimes thinking where is this going but in the mean time being well entertained. There were so many laugh out loud moments that it at one stage became in decent to listen to the book in public. I enjoyed it and will now get another book of this author. My brother loved it too with the quirky people in it, it is hilarious.
I stumbled across nature girl when looking for other titles narrated by william roberts. I thought i'll give it a go and found i couldn't stop listening. Carl Hiaasen is one of the funniest authors i have read or heard since Tom Sharpe, His characters are simply the best just thinking about them brings tears of laughter to my eyes. I now have every Carl Hiaasen book in my wishlist.
"So glad I discovered Hiaasen"
I found this so funny, with great characters and such funny pictures painted, and with little throwaway lines that made me laugh out loud. I only discovered Carl Hiaasen a week or two ago and I'm very glad to find that he's written so many books to listen to. He creates a complete world of eccentrics and ordinary people forced into eccentricity by their situation. I really loved it. I'm just downloading another Hiaasen as I write this.
