boring boring boring

Too bored to finish this book, I could care less about a boy and his criminal investigator mentor. Progresses very slowly too, and the author fails to create any emotional attachment to the main character. Narrator is also a bit too zealous for my listening preference.

Very confusing and slow; hated the reader.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better description and a better reader.

What could Peter Straub have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I think the story line was very meandering and hard to follow.

What didn’t you like about Patrick Lawlor’s performance?

His narration and the way he portrayed other characters just didn't work for me.

Straub Does It Again

Another good mystery by Peter Straub. There are some interesting social/economical conflicts played out in the story as well as the unraveling of some family secrets including murder.

Great book, mediocre performance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is one of my favorite books. Every time I read it, and I've read it at least half a dozen times, I find something new to admire. So maybe you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that Mystery had been made into an Audible book. What you won't be able to imagine is my disappointment with the reader. Except for a single sentence at the end, he lacked all modulation, all nuance. What he had in abundance, regrettably, was zeal, and this he brought to bear on each page, each paragraph, each sentence (except one). What a disappointment.

What a mess...

I was excited for this book b'cuz the first one in the series, Koko, was vivid and twisted.

This book has almost nothing to do with Koko, and has none of the same characters. The timeline of this story doesn't work, and gets even worse when trying to justify it against the first book.

But that's not even the worst of it. This 20hr (+/-) book could've been wrapped up into a concise 12hrs if the author hadn't gone on with so many irrelevant details. And I'm a reader/listener who likes long books with lots of character development and a visual feel!

I won't be completing this series. At this point I really don't care what happens in that third book!

The plot twist was very good.

Slow moving to get to the interesting part. I almost stop listening but I am glad I kept going.

Love this trilogy!

This was the first book of the Blue Rose Trilogy that I read, not in the correct order, but I don't think it matters much. I've read all of them at least twice now, and I love Straub's writing style and character development. Although lengthy, his books hook me in the first few chapters, and by the end of each I'm left wanting more. What more can you ask for?
