Part love story, part workplace drama, this sharply observed novel is a witty critique of the false judgments we make in a social-media-obsessed world. New York Times best-selling author Sophie Kinsella has written her most timely novel yet.
Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie's life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle - from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she's trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.
Then, just as she's finding her feet - not to mention a possible new romance - the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family's farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away - until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie's future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.
Sophie Kinsella is celebrated for her vibrant, relatable characters and her great storytelling gifts. Now she returns with all of the wit, warmth, and wisdom that are the hallmarks of her best sellers to spin this fresh, modern story about presenting the perfect life when the reality is far from the truth.

"Katie is a winning heroine.... Kinsella creates characters that are well-rounded, quirky, and a complete joy to read." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Driven by Katie's witty observations and numerous missteps as she attempts to reconcile various aspects of her identity, this novel is smartly satirical and entertaining." (Publishers Weekly)
"Another outstanding novel...a perfect combination of fun, laughable moments rounded out with some deep-seated family and relationship issues." (Booklist)
What a welcome reprieve from nasty world politics. Loved this chance to escape into a new Sophie novel. Very different from her other novels, but still full of great wit and loveable characters. Switched my schedule up today and did a bunch of cooking and cleaning just so I could play this audiobook. Highly recommend for a lovely escape.
I have never been disappointed by any of Sophie kinsella books. This book was just as wonderful as all the others and I enjoyed every minute listening to it. I just finished it and I'm wanting to read it again immediately... Just in case I missed something. The narrator did a wonderful job, as well. I always know that I will be entertained while listening to a book or reading a book written by Sophie Kinsella!
like most of Ms. Kinsella's books this built wonderful momentum and had me laughing out loud. while listening to the last chapter I had to put down my computer, I couldn't do anything else but Focus
It's a fun story, great for taking you out of your day. It's not the most deep book, but it's entertaining and has some wise tidbits throughout . I listened to it within a couple if days as it just kind of sucks you in.
The narrator does a great job. She has a pleasant voice, let's the emotion shine through and let's you imagine what is happening.
A fun book!
I like all about her home away from the big city.
Yes, and this was just as good as her others.
I think the part where they were having a drink. (The club)
I find all her books entertaining and the best books to listen to when driving:)
this book had me right from the start, but the main character just got so obnoxious in the middle (which I realize was part of the point). But, many of the "major" plot twists felt so predictable, yet I still felt the need to finish out the book (maybe it is because I'm driving across country and there wasn't much else to do).
I also thought the book was a bit YA in certain areas
Basically I wouldn't recommend or listen again, but because I did finish it, I kept the overall at 3 stars. so again, it wasn't horrible, but I would definitely pass.
I found this book really dull to get through. no surprises, saw the conflict coming. whodunit was no mystery at all, found the characters to be one dementional
The main character Katie is so self-centered throughout the entire book. I found it hard to relate to her and to buy into the drama that she created in her life.
