A Suspenseful Clean Romance

This is an entertaining story with plenty of suspense and intrigue. The characters were well developed and the period accurate. This was a fun story to listen to with good clean romance.

Nice Regency Romance

Any additional comments?

This was a nice story and I enjoyed the occasional background sounds (birds tweeting, horse hooves on the road, etc.). They were subtle enough not to distract from the narration and were a great addition. Attitudes of people in this era were so different from what we would consider to be contemporary sensibilities. The narrator was engaging and enhanced the story. I enjoyed this audiobook and I would recommend it for listeners of Regency Romance.

A regency without humour, doesn't work for me

I love regency novels, but this novel was very disppointing. Although the writing was good and the plot made sense it lacked something that's really important to me when reading this genre - especielly when it's a British novel - HUMOUR. It has nothing of that kind. And I mean Rhys Bowen-humour mixed with a huge storyline. I didn't care for any of the characters, none of them were likeable or even much alive. I'm sorry...

Narrator Melanie Fraser always does a wonderful job and is very good with all the different voices. She always makes characters come to life and also in this one. I just didn't find the characters to be developed enough and I found the storyline boring. 5 stars to Ms Fraser for her great efforts.

Enjoyable

I think the narrator did a fantastic job reading the story. She did the voices and added the laughter and tones depending on the situation, and through her voice I could easily envision the story! The story itself was well done, well thought out and very well tied together. But I didn't love it and I think that may be personal preference. I didn't like how the characters reacted sometimes to a situation, it was a bit out of character sometimes too, but still Made for a well rounded story so I wouldn't not recommend it for that. And it was sometimes hard to follow when we jumped into another person's Point of view. Thankfully the narrator doing the voices definitely helped keep that a bit more clear. I think I would have been a bit lost on occasion when reading it myself.
That being said, I still think the story was well done, true to the time period, and a good overall romantic adventure. I would still recommend it and I feel that the narrator definitely made up for any personal issues I had with the story, making for an overall good listening experience.

A great clean regency romance!

Any additional comments?

I love regency romance! What made it better was the narrator. She bought out the characters more. They felt more 3D. I thought she was one of the best female narrator that I have heard so far. She also uses music/gun fire in the background, which makes it a little more better in my opinion.

I gave the book a four because the characters would do things that are correct for that time period and do other things that would get the gossip mongers talking about for months, like, Clara going to an establishment a young women of good background would not set her foot in to. I understood why she did it but it didn't feel realistic to me.
The other thing that I found really surprising is a rake that is unable to persuade a naive young female he likes to marry him. Instead he goes on a drinking binge.
Even with this I still liked it and would recommend to those who love clean regency romance.

Sweet story

I have enjoyed regency stories from time to time. I thought the author did a good job describing what I imagine were the way things were. I found this story to be a nice diversion. I thought the narrator did a good job. The story is relatively clean and I'd rate it at PG. A Fun Regency Romp

What did you love best about My Lord the Spy?

The characters. I thought they were well drawn and realistic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Lord the Spy?

The meeting of Clara and Edmund.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Fraser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, sadly I have not. I look forward to finding more of her work.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not extreme, but, yes, it made me laugh.

Any additional comments?

My Lord, the Spy is a fun romp in Regency England. It’s well-written and well-narrated. Did I mention that it’s a fun listen? Oh, it is. How do you like your spies? I like mine well dressed and well bred, and the Earl of Chertsey, Edmund Ainscough, and his friend, Henry, fill the bill. Edmund meets Miss Clara Baker in a den of iniquity, where she has gone in mascaraed attire to find her brother who has fallen under the spell of a less than high moral character. From there, the story blooms and entices as smugglers enter the scene.

I thought that the narration was particularly good, bringing the characters to life, each voice distinct and recognizable, each emotion palpable. If I have one complaint, it’s that the pause between chapters, a technical issue, is a little too long. Each time I’d come to the end of one chapter, I was sure that I’d somehow turned off the Audible app by accident. I’d pull out my device and look at it before the next chapter began. That became annoying after a while.

I enjoyed the story, and I will be looking for more books written by Audrey Harrison and/or narrated by Melanie Fraser. I have not had the pleasure of experiencing either before.

I received this audiobook as a gift from the narrator. Her generosity had no influence upon my attitude toward this book. My opinions result only from the degree of enjoyment I experienced in listening to this book.

I do like the story. Not her best.

Especially at the end. SPOILER ALERT!!! When Charles dropped her off at Langfords to speak with him. Why in the world didn’t they take him back to there house? It wasn’t the greatest idea. They should have had him wake up in there house. That would have been great. Who wants to declare there love in a place like that?

Espionage thriller set in historical romance.

Any additional comments?

My Lord the Spy by Audrey Harrison is an entertaining historical romance set during the Regency period and the Napoleonic Wars. Not only is there romance, but there are multiple scenes with action, adventure, and near death experiences for our heroes. The story centers around Edmund Ainscough, the Earl of Chertsey, who is secretly a spy for king and country and who is tasked with discovering who may be disloyal to the crown.

Due to his roguish reputation, Edmund is welcomed into the seedier parts of society, which provides him the perfect opportunity to spy on his peers. It is in one of these seedier establishments where Edmund crosses path with Clara Baker. Clara snuck into this house of ill repute to protect her younger brother, despite what it might cost her reputation. Acting out of character, Edmund agrees to help Clara with her brother because she is unlike any other female of his acquaintance. [Clara’s brother Charles was befriended by a con artist posing as his friend and this friend is slowly divesting Charles of his inheritance. Edmund and his boss suspect that this particular con-artist is up to more illegal activities than merely bilking unsuspecting naïve lords of their money.]

Melanie Fraser narrated this audiobook and she did a fantastic job. She really brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. Melanie's crisp British accent and soft refined tones were perfect for this audio and contributed to my enjoyment of this book. In short, I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and definitely recommend it!

Enjoyable escape

I enjoyed reading this historical romance. It had a bit of intrigue and suspense. The narrator was great! I hope there is another in the series...
