Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Paranormal, 2013

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

Critic reviews

"Allison McLemore's delicate voice and Southern accent give Angel's first-person narration a humorous kick. McLemore excels at bringing Angel's self-deprecating and sarcastic comments to life. Her brisk pacing suits Angel's personality and draws listeners in from the first chapter, keeping them glued to their earphones as she plays up the book's 'gross factor' with drawling descriptions of gooey brains and crunchy skull cavities. She's also good at giving unique voices and mannerisms to secondary characters." ( AudioFile)

Excellent Story!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's funny, sad and heartwarming and you can't say that about too many Zombie stories!

What other book might you compare My Life as a White Trash Zombie to and why?

The Sookie Stackhouse series, simply because of the heroine's point of view, I found that and the southern accent very similar.

Have you listened to any of Allison McLemore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

Any additional comments?

Excellent story

I don't usually read for entertainment but I am glad I chose this book for that. Great story and narration. Was truly a performance and not just a reading. Has some profanity so not a "twilight" type novel.

Narrator had good performance of the southern accents. Being from the south it was like a touch of home.

Can't wait to listen to the next one.

No Brains needed, but fun to be had!!

White Trash Zombie is a fun story about Angel a strung out junkie who is turned into a Zombie but doesn't know by whom. Although her reaction to being turned is less than believable, the story is fun with a good cast of characters. There is a mystery to be solved, a life to be lived (undead of course) and lots of silliness to be had. You will get to watch Angel grow up a little bit and make some hard decisions about life. There's no romance but there are plenty of relationship issues addressed in this story. The end is a fun twist you won't see coming and the author does a good job of keeping the reader guessing about who exactly turned Angel. This is a good start to this new series and the book stands alone well without some crazy cliffhanger at the end. I give Rowland kudos for thinking up something a little different! I'm looking forward to finding out what comes next.

Lightweight and fun

This is definitely a good easy read for those that enjoy the softer side of zombie literature. If you want to turn off your brain and listen to a story about someone who eats them, I highly recommend this book!for those looking for something with substance, I would keep looking.

Way better than expected

Okay, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book, but I took a chance during one of the sales. I was delighted with Allison McLemore's southern accent and delivery. Angel's character is nuanced and flawed, no Mary Sues here.

If you're on the fence, give it a try! I have now listened to all of the books.

White Trash Gold!

I just love Angel! Shes and amazing women dealt a pretty crappy hand doing what she can to just live. Oddly dying and become a zombie is the best thing that could have happened to Angel. Not only does she live and survive she thrives and grows shes a hell of a badass chick!

Loved it!

This is very similar to iZombie in premise and tone. I thought the tv series might have been based on these books but apparently not. I loved iZombie and after this first book in this series I know I’m gonna love them as well. Not sure if McLemore was attempting a Cajun accent for a couple of characters but she’s got the Southern drawl down. Yes, we know we drawl, but sometimes it’s overdone. If you like your zombies to be more “human” and funny to boot, you’re gonna like this book.
