Audie Award Nominee, Paranormal, 2013

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

Critic reviews

"Allison McLemore's delicate voice and Southern accent give Angel's first-person narration a humorous kick. McLemore excels at bringing Angel's self-deprecating and sarcastic comments to life. Her brisk pacing suits Angel's personality and draws listeners in from the first chapter, keeping them glued to their earphones as she plays up the book's 'gross factor' with drawling descriptions of gooey brains and crunchy skull cavities. She's also good at giving unique voices and mannerisms to secondary characters." ( AudioFile)

One of the best zombie books out there

She I first listened to the sample and heard the thick Southern accent I was like: oh hell no!
But then I ran out of good zombie books to listen to and finally decided to give this a try. I'm so glad I did because I absolutely fell in love with Angel. The story is great, Angel is such a fun, impulsive, flawed yet wonderful character. It's very difficult not to like her. I kept listening to this book for hours on end and didn't want it to end. It's one of the few books I really wanted to just go on forever.

There's a good mystery in this book, but also a lot about Angel coming to terms with being a zombie. Just a fun, genuine book with believable and likeable characters.

The narrator is amazing! She really brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book.

Loved it!

What did you love best about My Life as a White Trash Zombie?

The story is a twist on life while still keeping those normal, every day occurances in place. You feel for the character, you root for them, you try to help them and by the end, you wish they were your friends in real life!

What other book might you compare My Life as a White Trash Zombie to and why?

I couldn't really compare any other books to this one. It kind of has a class of its own. The main character, Angel is similar to a character named Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich) in that she is kind of a screw up who is stubborn and funny and kick ass and still finding her way. I love both characters and it is nice to be able to relate to them and it makes you feel like you are not alone in your dumbassery!

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked all of them but the scene where she discovers that she had been set up to be date raped... She was talking to the investigator and it was just such a touching moment to see some else be so fierce in their feelings about what happened to someone else. It was very emotional and heart wrenching and I felt that through the words.

If you could rename My Life as a White Trash Zombie, what would you call it?

Nothing else would fit!

Any additional comments?

Allison McLemore is a prize to have as a reader for these books! She is flawless and I enjoy every minute of these books a little more with her voice added in there!

Frappucino Frenzy!

Where does My Life as a White Trash Zombie rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very interesting story and a wonderful audiobook performance. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The absolute strength of this book was the development of Angel's character. The supernatural trappings serve to illustrate Angel's real dilemma (ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer), how to transform herself from a "loser" to someone with self-esteem and reason for living.

What does Allison McLemore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ms. McLemore really embodied the main character and made her jump off the page. Her portrayal...accent, animation, characterization...added to Angel's independent yet sympathetic nature.

Who was the most memorable character of My Life as a White Trash Zombie and why?

Angel Crawford. Ms. Rowland has you rooting for her protagonist from the very first pages. You can "smell" the intelligence brewing just underneath Angel's low self-esteem and can't wait for it to start bubbling to the surface. Very nice character arc.

Any additional comments?

I did feel the plot was a bit quickly and conveniently wrapped up, but this was a minor consideration in an otherwise engaging read.

Kept my attention all the way through

What made the experience of listening to My Life as a White Trash Zombie the most enjoyable?

It was an interesting story that came together well. Aptly named title. Just when I thought I knew who did it, I was wrong. I loved trying to figure it out. The author took her time and thoughtfully completed the book without making it feel rushed at the end; I like that. You don't have to like zombies to like this book; it's written as if it could happen to anyone and in a believable way.

What did you like best about this story?

The writer held her own with this story without having to resort to sex scenes. Well done, Diana! It's not that I mind the sex in stories, but all too often, it's too obvious that the sex is there, not for the story, but to draw in a particular type of reader. Also, I liked that the author wrote without having to resort to page filler information that usually bores me to death ( what time it is, who made the clock, what the clock looks like, who invented the clock, what clock could have been bought...). The information she puts in the book is relevant to the story and characters.

What does Allison McLemore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did a great job of keeping the voices to the characters and also her reading was true, making me feel as if she was retelling the story instead of just reading it to me.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Dead interesting!

Any additional comments?

I love Janet Evanovich, Molly Harper, Charlaine Harris, Colleen Helme, and now I'm adding D. Rowland to my list!

True Blood With Zombies.

Mediocre genre fare. Allison McLemore more than earns her paycheck, but the material is uninspired at best.

I've been recommending this one to my friends

On a lark I was looking up Halloween audiobooks and saw people talking about this one. It did not disappoint. This audiobook was fantastic. The narrator really nails that southern Louisiana draw. On top of that the story and the characters are excellently crafted. This should be in everyone's collection who loves zombies or spooky books. It is a bit gory in places, but that isn't a bad thing. My favorite guilty pleasure

I am a listener of mostly literary fiction and non fiction. But sometimes, you need some trash. I think I have listened to this book a dozen tomes. When I need a lift, when I have to tackle a particularly depressing task, this is the listen. The reader is phenomenal.
