Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Paranormal, 2013

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

Critic reviews

"Allison McLemore's delicate voice and Southern accent give Angel's first-person narration a humorous kick. McLemore excels at bringing Angel's self-deprecating and sarcastic comments to life. Her brisk pacing suits Angel's personality and draws listeners in from the first chapter, keeping them glued to their earphones as she plays up the book's 'gross factor' with drawling descriptions of gooey brains and crunchy skull cavities. She's also good at giving unique voices and mannerisms to secondary characters." ( AudioFile)

What a fun ride!

Not my usual genre but followed the author on twitter be4 i knew of her books, really liked her and ppl kept mentioning her Zombie books. Took me a while to get one but... boy, I was hooked! From the writing, the story and fantastic narration. The dark, irreverently fun humor is right up my alley. I've got a lot of listening with her two series. I so recommend even if you're not into the genre. It's how i would imagine Carl Hiaason writing zombies! Glad i saw your "Christmas Dragons", Diana!

Good performance

Not my usual kind of story, but I really enjoyed this one. The narration (voices and accents) was well done, and the mystery was engaging.

Enjoyable!

Easy to listen to, I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't get the next book in the series.

Fun and cute

Would you listen to My Life as a White Trash Zombie again? Why?

Probably not, but it was an enjoyable listen!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the protagonist. She was cute and her transformation (not into a zombie) but into a self-assured woman was good.

What about Allison McLemore’s performance did you like?

Her accents were believable and just the right amount of annoying.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I was recovering from surgery, so I pretty much did! I enjoyed it a lot.

Any additional comments?

Fun, easy listen. Similar to IZombie, not too original, but cute!

Character driven urban fantasy

What I love about this story most is Angel, her inner dialog and her character development.
It is excellently done!
I felt invested in her, she is likable and believable.
No cliffhanger, which I always appreciate. The story continues in book 2, but this has a satisfying conclusion and completed story arc.
The narration is wonderful.

Recommended if you enjoy character driven urban fantasy.
You don’t have to like zombies to enjoy this series.

I liked it.

If you could sum up My Life as a White Trash Zombie in three words, what would they be?

Funny. Different. Brains.

What other book might you compare My Life as a White Trash Zombie to and why?

A similar flavor to The Sookie Stackhouse books but a more solid story.

Have you listened to any of Allison McLemore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only the second book in this series which I enjoyed as well.

Any additional comments?

The story and the telling was fun and solid enough. Good to listen to while I am working on projects. I liked the reader, though I really didn't care for her foreign accents which were thankfully few and far between. I recommend this for sure.

Very Original

I liked this book a lot. The ending was a little out of left field for me and there were a couple things that didn't really line up or was explained towards the end of the book but overall the writing and the voice actress was very good.

Difficult to rate. Enjoyable

This was hard for me to rate. It's not a great literary work or groundbreaking story, but I found it an enjoyable entertainment. Kind of like that favorite tv show we all have that fits the formula but we watch it every week. (Or a better example for some may be every romantic comedy movie ever lol)
I found I was actually rooting for our main character Angel and am curious to see where the story takes her in subsequent books.
Mos def a buy on sale or a double credit deal.
I'll call it my $5 Tuesday movie night read!
