Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Paranormal, 2013

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

Critic reviews

"Allison McLemore's delicate voice and Southern accent give Angel's first-person narration a humorous kick. McLemore excels at bringing Angel's self-deprecating and sarcastic comments to life. Her brisk pacing suits Angel's personality and draws listeners in from the first chapter, keeping them glued to their earphones as she plays up the book's 'gross factor' with drawling descriptions of gooey brains and crunchy skull cavities. She's also good at giving unique voices and mannerisms to secondary characters." ( AudioFile)

White Trash Zombies Rock!!

Very interesting take on zombie stories. I read this book because I thought the title was hilarious, but it was actually a very interesting story and I found my self unable to stop listening

Not exactly a comedy

It's played straight, poor white trash given a second chance at a morgue and forced to clean up her life. It's more of a mystery than anything else.

GREAT series

Any additional comments?

This series of books is SO great and refreshing in this genre of books. I listen to a LOT of paranormal books and series, but I have never been a fan of zombie apocalypse books. This series is very different from any of those!!! It's more like a vampire heroine book but with a GREAT twist on being a zombie!!! And each book just keeps getting better and better!!!!!

Mystery and humor well combined.

The premise of this book is what lead me to the download. I liked the idea of hearing the story from the "monsters" point of view. The author is funny without coming off as trying to hard. It's the mix of humor and mystery that keeps you engaged till the end.

The reader does a really amazing job of drawing you into the story through the mix of different voices. Her pitch and tone changes as the story does which I appreciated.

I gave this book four stars because of all the language. I want to recommend this book to others but know that the amount of swearing will be a put off to some. Overall a worthy read and I'll be downloading the second book in the series.

Not your average Zombie novel

If you follow the Zombie genre you will no doubt be aware of the rules; infection occurs due to bites or ingestion of body fluid, death occurs followed by reanimation, zombies are alerted by sound, aim for the head etc. I was surprised and grew to enjoy this books detour from the established 'facts'. Although many holes remain in the how and why in this book I think it's fair to say this is a commentary true to all Zombie stories.

The narrator's delivery in her southern drawl is enchanting and you really feel like you are living the life of the main character. That said this is not a literary masterpiece more of a trashy novel (as the title perhaps eludes to). Secondary characters lack depth and I would have enjoyed more of an insight into some of them. Perhaps the other books in the series answer some of the questions raised above?

I'm glad I purchased this book and will most likely listen to more in the series. The new take on Zombies and the delivery make it well worth the credit and I'd happily recommend it to Zombie genre fans.

More than just a comedy

I expected "My Life As A White Trash Zombie" to be a light-hearted - albeit dark - comedy. Instead of it being mere brainless entertainment, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were deeper aspects to the story. Underlying the humor are some very shrewd sociological and psychological reflections on life that make me want to pick up the rest of the series.

BRAINS!!

Any additional comments?

Woo Hoo! I absolutely loved this audiobook. I found this book during one of audible's sales a few months ago and bought it on a whim. I just hoped that it would be a fun quirky story to go along with its attention grabbing title and awesome pick cover. I was instantly hooked with this one. I started this audiobook while I was doing the laundry one Sunday night and I actually found myself spending a lot more time than usual folding clothes just because I didn't want the story to stop. Anything that can make me want to do laundry deserves a medal of some kind. I really haven't had this much fun listening to an audiobook in a long time.

I love a good zombie story. I will have to blame The Walking Dead for that I guess. These stories are just so much fun and I like how varied each one can be. Angel is really my kind of zombie. She doesn't throw herself a pity party when she realizes that she is a zombie. She just tries her best to figure out what she needs to do in order to take care of herself. Angel is smart and I really liked the way she thinks about things so spending time in her head was great.

The mystery of this book really took a backseat to the wonderful characters for me. There were really two mysteries in the book. The main focus seemed to be about a series of deaths in the area but I found myself really wanting to find out what had happened that made Angel into a zombie. That was the big question in my mind and I was satisfied with the outcome.

I really liked the flow of the story. The pace that things were revealed was just right to keep me very interested. It was a very well rounded book for me as well. I wouldn't say that this book was laugh out loud funny but there were some moments of humor that I really enjoyed. Angel's realization about what she is and what she wants was just a lot of fun. She also shows a lot of growth during the book which was well done.

I loved the narration of this audiobook. Allison McLemore did an absolutely fabulous job of bringing life to this story. I am so glad that I went with the audio on this one because I can't imagine a better way to experience this story. I loved the voices that she used for all of the characters and her southern accent really was perfect for the story. I would definitely like to listen to more books narrated by this narrator and plan to continue with the series very soon.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I had a great time listening to it and would recommend to others to try it on audio if they have a chance. This is the first book by Diana Rowland that I have read and I can't wait to see what else she can come up with. It looks like I will be purchasing the remaining audiobooks in this series very soon because I need to spend more time with Angel as soon as possible.

Not for the squeamish!

I listened to this book on Audio. I enjoyed it mostly. But from a mature standpoint (as if the title "White Trash Zombie" is mature right?) I'd consider this book a little ridiculous. Not because the writing is ridiculous, the story line is ridiculous. Completely out there! Some predictable, some not. I loved the narrator, she has a great way of really giving the characters personality. Angel the main character, is likable and I found myself rooting for her. Her personality is hilarious, but the author's dialogue made me roll my eyes a few time. I'm pretty sure this series wouldn't be a favorite to the mature literary gurus, although it's mature content. This series most likely targets the amateur or "younger" generations. It was definitely a different type of genre than I'm used too. I'm not positive I'll be reading or listening to the others in the series, because I have many others on my "to read" list that interest me more. I'll sit on it for a few weeks. We shall see.
