2015 Audie Award Finalist for Fiction and Solo Narration—Male

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Featured Article: The Shining—Book vs. Movie

Set in the claustrophobia-inducing snow-covered peaks of an isolated hotel in the middle of the Rockies, The Shining is a classic work of psychological horror that’s just about as chilling as it gets. But it’s so, so much more than your classic story of spirits and a man’s descent into madness—it’s also a tender yet deeply painful meditation on addiction, family, abuse, and redemption. Stanley Kubrick rejected Stephen King's initial treatment of the screenplay, and the author was largely dissatisfied with his novel’s jump to the big screen. So what exactly are the differences between The Shining movie and the novel?

Great crime novel

This was well written and very well narrated ! I really enjoyed the character depth. A few plot devices where a little obvious, but it didn't matter.

OH NO! The monsters in this book could be REAL!

What made the experience of listening to Mr. Mercedes the most enjoyable?

As with any King book the story-line never let you lose interest. The fact that the main character was so incredibly relate-able to any 'average Joe' made the book more intriguing and interesting, maybe because many a Constant Reader could see themselves as him.

What did you like best about this story?

As a big fan of King who has read all but a couple of his books, I really enjoy the fact that the horrors depicted here are (could easily be) real. This makes the story-line so much more interesting as you don't have to really use your imagination to imagine it happening. I'm sure there are more Brady Hartfield's among us than one would like to consider.

Any additional comments?

Another "Must Read" from King. Do not hesitate to buy this book unless you are a teen-aged girl who isn't going to be happy unless someone gets their neck bitten or Pennywise shows up with an axe. This is NOT Sci-fy horror fantasy with a stud-muffin for a Hero. This is a horror story you could very well have filed away beside Helter Skelter, or "The Only Living Witness", but thank God King's psychos aren't real.

Excellent Work and Read

As always King pulls off a thriller that has you rooted to your seat even when the criminal is known.

Hooked me through to the end.

Great performance by Will Patton. This is only my 2nd time reading a Stephen King novel, but I will continue to devour them. Good tension, a little stomach-clenching, definitely a little twisted and odd.. I enjoyed it!

Great Read.....

How can you go wrong with a "King" book.....good story....well paced...excellent read. I walk many miles every day and listening to a good audio book on my I pod makes the miles fly by....there were times when I reached the end of my scheduled walk...but i would do a bit more to see what was happening....
