Publisher's summary

A lady's reputation is a fragile thing. If anyone ever discovered that Miss Elizabeth Bennet had received a letter from a single gentleman, she could be ruined...or forced to marry a man she detests. In this Pride & Prejudice variation, Elizabeth takes the safer course and refuses to read Mr. Darcy's letter of explanation. Returning home unaware of Wickham's true nature, Elizabeth confesses everything to him, putting both Mr. Darcy and herself in grave danger from Wickham's schemes.

Wonderful book, wonderful narrator

I love all of Abigail Reynolds books, read them all more than once. I was thrilled to hear they are coming to audio. It is always a little scary when a beloved story is read by an unknown voice but Pearl Hewitt did not disappoint, her narration was spot on for the characters as well as the level of emotion each one deserves. I listen to audiobooks while driving to and from work as well as walking and at the gym, this stroy had me not wanting to stop. Whether you like P&P characters, regency story lines or just a great book, Mr Darcy's Letter will fit the bill quite nicely!

A Fine Listen

I have read and/or listened to almost all of Abigail Reynolds P&P variations. Her stories are well told and although romantic, not salacious. I only have two comlaints. First, Darcy remains unwilling to believe Elizabeth loves him and wishes for his second proposal and finally proposes as a way for Bingley to be free to marry Jane. That is almost as bad a proposal of his first in my opinion. Who wants a proposal that's base is that it will make your sister happy. It's a unique approach so I give kudos to Ms. Reynolds for this never before encountered approach in my many P&P variations readings.

My biggest complaint with this audiobook is the narrator. Although her female voices are just fine, ALL of the male voices are terrible. I cringed listening to Darcy's voice. If you can get past this fault it is a fine story.

Defaming Jane Austen characters

I am appalled that this writer thought it to be ok to defame the characters of Elizabeth Bennett and FitzWilliam Darcy! The reason I listen to these Jane Austen variations is because of the purity and integrity of the main characters. If the author wanted to write porn, she should have made it a book of her own origin. I'm sorely disappointed and disgusted - is there nothing sacred?!

Fantastic Entertainment

Incredible book & performance! Ms Hewitt made the well developed characters blossom into real live beings. I was engaged from start to finish, never wanting to turn off the fun. I felt as though I was there with all these fantastic men and women; how can they all be voiced by one person?! The worst part of the book was once it was done and there was no more magic to hear! I will most definitely be looking forward to more books from Ms Reynolds and hearing Ms. Hewitt make the words jump off the page and into reality!

Good

Another good story from Abigail Reynolds. A stubborn Elizabeth refuses to read Darcy’s letter after his failed proposal at Hunsford. There’s a Wickham surprise to be had. Pearl Hewitt does a
marvellous job with the narration and performance. My one quibble is her Darcy voice. It simply doesn’t endear me to him.

Barely OK

Elizabeth is stupid in this book. I cannot understand why Darcy loves her. This must be an early Abigale Reynolds' book because I generally like her books a lot, but not this one. Wickham just won't go away and his outcome is not all that satisfying. Lydia is her usual aggravating self and ends up better than she deserves. I wish Mrs. Bennett would get what she deserves. She is extremely unlikable but usually skates by without any consequences. In Mr. Darcy's Letter she once again skates by.

The narrator is not very good. She is very excitable and her voices for many of the characters, particularly the men, is absurd. This is not a book that I will listen to again.

Great early work of a revered author in this genre

I have to revisit Reynolds’ older stories every other year, some of them more often. I continue to be an auto buy reader of hers. I do reread or listen to her newer books more often. Her writing has become adventuresome and that is before she started contributing to JAFF’s fantasy sub-genre! But for the early years of JAFF her stories stood out as being the most romantic, heartbreaking and angst-filled.

I’m not fond of this narrator. Others will find her dramatic perfectly suited. For me the extremes she uses for Mrs Bennet hurt my ears even though Hewitt can build her character on that portrayal of her alone.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book but maybe best read the first time.

Enjoyable

By not reading “The Letter” Elizabeth continues to make assumptions where Darcy is concerned.

Ms. Hewitt does a nice job of narrating, not my favorite, and I’ve heard better, but also heard FAR worse.

Always Read Personal Letters,

This story could have been told in the half time
It could eliminated ,fornication!/Pre marital out
of marriage relations ,I am grateful I could skip
ahead ,the one added interest was Thomas Wickham, and with Darcy a saving of Lydia, and
resulting ,in a more composed ,responsible Lydia
The results of the 2 oldest Bennett sisters, was the same !Except it took a long time to get there.

Delightful story with excellent narration

I already knew I enjoyed the story, but I found myself listening to this book every chance I got. Thoroughly enjoyable tale for anyone who enjoys P&P variations. Will listen again!
