Mother's Boys | [Margaret Forster]

Mother's Boys

The attack on 15-year-old Joe Kennedy was particularly squalid and vicious. Sheila Armstrong's grandson, Leo, usually a quiet, well-behaved boy, was found holding a knife. Harriet Kennedy cannot cope with her son's continuing pain; Sheila, who reared Leo, cannot bear the lasting guilt. In a powerful and moving tale of suffering and forgiveness, the two women confront the complex range of emotions that motherhood entails.

    "Great characters"

This book is mainly about the relationship between 2 women - the mother of a boy who is attacked and the mother of the attacker although other family relationships are also covered. I really liked the way the author never took the easy or expected approach and so the characters seemed really genuine in all their complexities. She also handled very adeptly the way people's feelings towards others are not constant but change over time. I felt more and more drawn into this book the longer I listened. My only (minor) criticism is that some of the details around the legal process would not have occurred in reality.

    Story
"Wonderful book, thoroughly enjoyed every chapter."

Well written, well narrated. The story unfolds little by little, reviling two "mothers" heartache's from different perspectives. There are always two sides to every story told, and this is a great example. I found myself sympathizing with both "Mothers" in a different way. I enjoy Margaret Fosters books immensely, and this book was true to form.
