Unfortunately for Sheldon, Annie is mad; mad that he killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain, in his latest book; mad that he wants to escape; and of course, mad in the most extreme clinical sense of the word.
To set the world straight, Annie buys Sheldon a typewriter and some paper, drugs him, locks him in a room, and forces him to bring Misery back to life in a novel dedicated to her. Fear of physical torture is Sheldon's greatest motivation. One wrong sentence and she is likely to smash his legs with a sledgehammer, cut his thumbs off with a hacksaw, or much, much worse. But writers have weapons too.

The narrator, Lindsay Crouse, is fantastic at the characterization of Annie Wilkes. I hadn't read the book or seen the movie since back in the late 80's/early 90's when they came out and had forgotten a lot of the story. This version had me on the edge of my (car) seat. It's one of Stephen King's best married with a fantastic narrator!
I had seen the movie many times before but never read the book. When I started to listen, right away I felt that the tone was much darker, if that's possible. You really feel bad for Paul Sheldon, the writer "rescued" by insane former nurse that forces him to write for his life. Cringe-inducing torture scenes will make you think twice about finishing but you will be glad you did because this is an amazing book.

There often were times when I found myself turning blue from holding my breath!!
If your righting off the book because youve seen the movie your making a big mistake! As the case is in most instances, the book contains far more story and far greater depth than the movie- and this book is no exception.
Misery is A facinating multi level tale that will hold you tight in its fist till the last word.,Terror, horror and excruciating suspense await you in this masterful tale. Narration is perfect too! 5 stars easy!
This book is absolutely wonderful! I watched the film long ago, and now want to see it again, but as usual, the book is far better, and I thought the film was excellent! I would recommend this but if you listen whilst attending to other things, be warned. You might not get anything done other than listening.
This was a great story with a great reader. If you like Stephen King, then this one will be worth it!

This book has a special place in my heart - as many of King's earlier books do - so I was apprehensive about going for the audio version, knowing there was a chance of a major disappointment. I'm happy to report that disappointment was not the case at all - the narration, the pace, and the overall feel meshed perfectly with my own mental interpretation. New listeners or old fans - it doesn't matter - this selection is a sure thing for all who want a psychological thrill ride.
I am 60 years old, I have a hard time reading, I once read Cujo by Stephen King, I have tried to read since and just can't seem to do it, old age I guess, LOL.
I just want to thank you for making these books available in audio. If only I could put them on a cd and play them in my car on the way to work, I have a 45 min drive to work every day.

This book suffers from limited characters and a limited setting. The book takes place in a bedroom in a rural cabin, and there are really only two characters. For a 12-hour book it gets kind of tedious. The plot theme is unique; hold your favorite romance novelist hostage and make them write you a new book. The books starts off well, it's that just after 8 hours of the same thing it gets to be too much. Is he going to escape? What new torture is on the menu for the day? Etc. etc.
I am a huge fan of Stephen King so I hate to knock his books. He has much better ones (The Shining, Carrie, Bag of Bones), so this is slightly subpar. If you a super King fan, then I suppose listen to this. If you are getting acquainted to his books try some of his other ones. There are dozens more.
I loved this book when I had it on cassette in the 90's. The only thing that bugs me about these old recordings is that there are no chapter breaks in books like this, Gerald's Game, or Deloris Clayborn. I'm unsure as to why they decided to edit them out as they are in all of King's future audiobook releases EG the Dark Tower novels, Dreamcatcher, 112263 and others.
But the book was very entertaining and terrifying. I found myself just as fearful of Wilks' moodswings as Paul throughout the story. It's been a while since I read this one-- had this one in my library since 2008 or so, but I seem to remember Wilks described as a force of nature as well as a goddess. Stephen certainly has a way with words and that's exactly the way this constant reader feels about the antagonist. This psycho fangirl is, in my opinion anyway, among King's most memorable antagonists of all time. But Pennywise will always be my favorite. Wilks comes in third place right behind Flagg. Sorry Annie.
AUDIBLE MAKES READING POSSIBLE AND EASY FOR ME...I AM VISUALLY IMPAIRED. I WISH THEY HAD ALL THE BOOKS I WANT I WOULD SNAP THEM UP!
heed the weatherman.
i liked the first time paul got out of the room where he was held captive. but there were many parts that were memorable.
oh she was GREAT. what a good job she did. she added emotion and made you feel that she was right there!
well there were really not many choices. i would not want to take annie out! you would never figure her out as he saw the world according to annie and king told me exactly how she thinks.
it would be paul and i would ask him is he stephen king in desguise. :)
i have read the book in print years ago, seen the movie, and now the audiobook. i like the the audiobook best. i will read it many times.
