Publisher's summary

Viewed by many as the greatest science fiction writer on any planet, Philip K. Dick has written some of the most intriguing, original, and thought-provoking fiction of our time. This collection includes stories that will make you laugh, cringe...and stop and think.

In "The Minority Report," a special unit that employs those with the power of precognition to prevent crimes proves itself less than reliable. This story was the basis of the feature film Minority Report.

In, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," an everyguy's yearning for more exciting "memories" places him in a danger he never could have imagined. This story was the basis of the feature film Total Recall.

In "Paycheck," a mechanic who has no memory of the previous two years of his life finds that a bag of seemingly worthless and unrelated objects can actually unlock the secret of his recent past, and insure that he has a future. This story was the basis of the feature film Paycheck.

In "Second Variety," the UN's technological advances to win a global war veer out of control, threatening to destroy all of humankind. This story was the basis of the feature film Screamers.

And "The Eyes Have It" is a whimsical, laugh-out-loud play on the words of the title.

Minority Report

I had read some of these many years ago. I never really liked the way the Dick developed his characters but his ideas--his IDEAS--were and are amazing. That is why so many movies have been made of these stories, sometimes changing the story lines significantly (as in Minority Report) but retaining the central ideas. So, I think the book is a good listen for that reason, plus Dullea does a good job.

A sci find classic that proves more fun than the movies

Sorry and performance were top notch.

I gave 4 stars because the formatting seemed to have an awkward transition to audible. I am sure this must have been intended as tapes or perhaps discs first. Music interludes and chapter breaks come at odd points rather than divisions between the actual stories.

Nice Collection of Four P.D.K. Short Stories

This is a really nice collection of sci-fi short stories, which have also been adapted into movies. Each shows Philip K. Dick's mind-bending ideas, albeit in a dated style. My only real complaint is it is hard to find where stories start.
FYI: 0:00:00 -- Minority Report; 1:30:14 -- We Can Remember It for You Wholesale (Total Recall); 2:23:43 -- Paycheck; 3:46:35 -- Second Variety (Screamers)

better than the movies

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The short stories of Phillip K. Dick are a fascinating glimpse of one man's vision of various futures. They are definitely quirky and very non-Hollywood. If you expect neatly wrapped up happy endings, these stories are not for you. The reader Keir Dullea is excellent. If I'm not mistaken, he is an actor who is most famous for playing Dave Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He brings the various characters to life, imbuing them with individual personalities. I highly recommend this title.

Story Start Times

Excellent stories, great narration, horrible organization of the content. Despite yet another audiobook listed here on Audible hitting that oh too common pet peeve of not having any rationale associated with the "chapters" listed, this collection will still delight any Science Fiction fan. Long time listeners and newcomers both to Philip K. Dick will appreciate these stories and the narrator's excellent delivery. 5/5 for performance and story, 0/5 for organization of content.

To help anyone else who may be facing the same frustration of not being able to find the start of each story I've listed the start chapter and timestamps for them here:

"The Minority Report" - Chapter 1 - 0:24

"We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" - Chapter 3 - 5:33

"Paycheck" - Chapter 4 - 16:40

"Second Variety" - Chapter 6 - 8:41

"The Eyes Have It" - Chapter 7 - 59:18

Good books

Easy books. Interesting. I would recommend them but say that the writing wasn't epic, but they were good stories.

Great book

The collection of short stories are fantastic I like them better than the movies are based off of them but the second to last story the one about the clause not knowing if there are humans or robots would made a great movie

A collection of great short stories

The first two stories in this collection are well known with famous movies, the other three are ones I had not heard of that are greatly entertaining with unexpected twists and turns.

wish the chapters lined up to the tracks.

great stories, great reader. hard to navigate. I don't understand why the tracks can't line up to the stories/chapters.
