Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.

Story
Philip K. Dick’s classic short story tells the story of Douglas Quail, an unfulfilled bureaucrat who dreams of visiting Mars, but can't afford the trip. Luckily, there is Rekal Incorporated, a company that lets everyday stiffs believe they’ve been on incredible adventures. The only problem is that when technicians attempt a memory implant of a spy mission to Mars, they find that real memories of just such a trip are already in Quail's brain. Suddenly, Quail is running for his life from government agents, but his memories might make him more of a liability than he is worth.

On Mars, the harsh climate could make any colonist turn to drugs to escape a dead-end existence. Especially when the drug is Can-D, which transports its users into the idyllic world of a Barbie-esque character named Perky Pat. When the mysterious Palmer Eldritch arrives with a new drug called Chew-Z, he offers a more addictive experience, one that might bring the user closer to God. But in a world where everyone is tripping, no promises can be taken at face value.

Story
Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than 100 short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects 10 of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists.

Story
Ragle Gumm has a unique job: Every day he wins a newspaper contest. And when he isn’t consulting his charts and tables, he enjoys his life in a small town, in 1959. At least, that’s what he thinks. But then strange things start happening. He finds a phone book where all the numbers have been disconnected, and a magazine article about a famous starlet named Marilyn Monroe, whom he’s never heard of. Plus, everyday objects are beginning to disappear and are replaced by strips of paper with words written on them, like "bowl of flowers" and "soft-drink stand".

Story
What happens after the bombs drop? This is the troubling question Philip K. Dick addresses with Dr. Bloodmoney, or How We Got Along After the Bomb. It is the story of a world reeling from the effects of nuclear annihilation and fallout, a world where mutated humans and animals are the norm, and the scattered survivors take comfort from a disc jockey endlessly circling the globe in a broken-down satellite.

Story
Delmak-O is a dangerous planet. Though there are only 14 citizens, no one can trust anyone else and death can strike at any moment. The planet is vast and largely unexplored, populated mostly by gelatinous cube-shaped beings that give cryptic advice in the form of anagrams. Deities can be spoken to directly via a series of prayer amplifiers and transmitters, but they may not be happy about it. And the mysterious building in the distance draws all the colonists to it, but when they get there each sees a different motto on the front.

Story
In Radio Free Albemuth, his last novel, Philip K. Dick morphed and recombined themes that had informed his fiction from A Scanner Darkly to VALIS and produced a wild, impassioned work that sounds like a visionary alternate history of the United States. Agonizingly suspenseful, darkly hilarious, and filled with enough conspiracy theories to thrill the most hardened paranoid, Radio Free Albemuth is proof of Dick's stature as our century's greatest science fiction writer.

Story
Jack Isidore doesn’t see the world like most people. According to his brother-in-law, Charley, he’s a crap artist, obsessed with his own bizarre theories and ideas, which he fanatically records in his many notebooks. He is so grossly unequipped for real life that his sister and brother-in-law feel compelled to rescue him from it. But while Fay and Charley Hume put on a happy face for the world, they prove to be just as sealed off from reality, in thrall to obsessions that are slightly more acceptable than Jack’s but a great deal uglier.

Publisher's summary
In "The Minority Report," a special unit that employs those with the power of precognition to prevent crimes proves itself less than reliable. This story was the basis of the feature film Minority Report.
In, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," an everyguy's yearning for more exciting "memories" places him in a danger he never could have imagined. This story was the basis of the feature film Total Recall.
In "Paycheck," a mechanic who has no memory of the previous two years of his life finds that a bag of seemingly worthless and unrelated objects can actually unlock the secret of his recent past, and insure that he has a future. This story was the basis of the feature film Paycheck.
In "Second Variety," the UN's technological advances to win a global war veer out of control, threatening to destroy all of humankind. This story was the basis of the feature film Screamers.
And "The Eyes Have It" is a whimsical, laugh-out-loud play on the words of the title.

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Story
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on Earth....

- Og i de sidste 20 år biografgaengere med, for siden 1982, hvor Ridley Scott for første gang filmatiserede Philip K. From the towering heights of Olympos Mons on Mars, the mighty Zeus and his immortal family of gods, goddesses, and demigods look down upon a momentous battle, observing - and often influencing - the legendary exploits of Paris, Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, and the clashing armies of Greece and Troy. Thomas Hockenberry, former 21st-century professor and Iliad scholar, watches as well. It is Hockenberry's duty to observe and report on the Trojan War's progress to the so-called deities who saw fit to return him from the dead.

In High Earth, digital entertainment is everything. Shows. Virtual worlds. Simulations - there’s something for everybody in a city where working for a living has been rendered obsolete by technological advancements. Even a short walk outside to visit with others is no longer necessary. Just load into the network and you can be with anyone, anywhere. For Asher Reinhart, nothing compares to Ignis; a live reality show that pushes human beings to their very extremes.

PK Dick is always a joy to read or listen to
Working my way through all the audiobooks by this author that I can find. He was a visionary and an extraordinary storyteller. My one -sizable gripe - about this audio book is not about the author(extraordinary) or the narrator ( engaging, entertaining) but with the inexplicable way that the chapters are divided up. There’s no rhyme nor reason to it. Chapters begin in the middle of stories; one chapter might contain parts of one story and then parts of another. It’s so frustrating because it limits being able to go back to any specific story to relisten. There’s no list of stories anywhere, another frustration that would have been remedied if each chapter were named for a story as other short story collections are organized and labeled. Gah!

Weird audio editing
The only story I really liked was Minority Report. We Can Remember It for You Wholesale and Paycheck had weird endings. The other ones were just straight weird. I forget what they were called.
The audiobook itself was strangely edited. aside from the first one starting at the beginning, the subsequent story start in the middle of chapters. There's also an unnecessary orchestral interlude randomly throughout some of the stories. The narrator was good though.

For Fans of Sci-Fi Psychological Thrillers
Every story except for the final little 7 minute one is phenomenal.
The audiobook is very lazily organized though, with a completely nondescript 7 "chapters" that don't line up with the beginning and end of the short stories.
Narrator is solid. I recommend this collection to anyone who has the capacity for critical thinking and an interest in sci-fi.

The reading is terrific!
I enjoy PKD a lot, and its fun to hear the unabridged versions of a couple popular screen adaptations. But the most outstanding aspect of this production is the speaker - his characterizations are spot on, and his pace and breathe control are among the best I've ever heard. if you like scifi at all, but only know PKD from 'Blade Runner', this is def worth a credit.

Each story is worth a read.
A good short collection of PKD stories. Each one has the sense of unease and suspicion that makes his characters so alive.
It's a fast read, good entry point into PKD's work.

Great stories...what was the sound editor smoking?
Great short stories, really good narration, but the sound editing is......bizarre. The chapters do not in any way align with the actual stories, so it is hard to find where the next story begins. (for instance, Chapter 4 is 31:04 long, but the third story "Paycheque" begins at 16:40) To make matters worse, there are occasional random bits of music, but not in any consistent way. It is just so weird and I really can't fathom how this exceptional science fiction was released in this bizarre format.
That being said, I really enjoyed the actual material and am glad I listened to it. These stories were each the basis of successful movies; it is interesting to hear the original story, and compare it to its big screen adaptation.

Original and Intriguing Fiction
This book contains several stories of various lengths. "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" is the basis for the "Total Recall" movies and with "Paycheck" they are worth the 5 star rating. For original, and intriguing fiction Phillip K. Dick is the Grand Master.
My only complaint is that the chapters don't seam to be broken at the end of the stories.
Highly recommended.
