Publisher's summary

At the center is the beautiful, unconquerable witch, Merrick. She is a descendant of the gens de colors libres, a cast derived from the black mistresses of white men, a society of New Orleans octoroons and quadroons, steeped in the lore and ceremony of voodoo, who reign in the shadowy world where the African and the French - the white and the dark - intermingle. Her ancestors are the Great Mayfair Witches, of whom she knows nothing - and from whom she inherits the power and magical knowledge of a Circe.

Into this exotic New Orleans realm comes David Talbot, hero, storyteller, adventurer, almost mortal vampire, visitor from another dark realm. It is he who recounts Merrick's haunting tale - a tale that takes us from the New Orleans of the past and present to the jungles of Guatemala, from the Mayan ruins of a century ago to ancient civilizations not yet explored.

Anne Rice's richly told novel weaves an irresistible story of two worlds: the witches' world and the vampires' world, where magical powers and otherworldly fascinations are locked together in a dance of seduction, death, and rebirth.

Enjoyable story and narration.

I am a long time fan of the Vampire Chronicles as well as the Mayfair Witches. Anne Rice is rich in her detail, history and interweaving of characters. The narrator did justice to the book. I was impressed his performance.

Spellbinding

My favorite of her tales in the Vampire Chronicles! The characters are very much alive and are endearing.

Awful sound quality

Yes, an enjoyable story and voice performance but the audio quality was so terrible it made enjoying the book nearly impossible. The QC is in the WC at Audible apparently.

Amazing Story!!

Overall, the story is amazing! Yes, the reader takes time...but this story is a must listen! You will love it and it starts off slow, but then speeds up very fast!

Much better

The Vampire Armand was... troubling. This book was far more enjoyable. It felt much more like the other stories I've enjoyed. The narrator was fine, but the audio quality was awful. It sounded as though the narrator was on the other side of a thick pane of glass. An equalizer for the Audible app would go a long way toward such issues.

Wonderful story

This is one of my very favorite stories from the vampire chronicles. The storytelling performance is amazing. I do have one small gripe, the audio sounds very muffled
