Publisher's summary

A character so outrageous he could only have come from the ingenious imagination of Elmore Leonard, lewd, lecherous, law-bending Florida jurist Judge Robert "Maximum Bob" Gibbs has been judged guilty by a grudge-bearing malefactor and sentenced to death - by alligator, if necessary. Maximum Bob is a delightfully dark classic thriller from "the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever" (New York Times Book Review), and any listener who loved getting gleefully lost in the criminal mayhem of Get Shorty, Rum Punch, Out of Sight, The Hot Kid, or any number of the inimitable Leonard's numerous crime fiction masterworks will get maximum enjoyment out of this one.

Excellent Story, Great Characters

I’m really enjoying Elmore Leonard’s books the more and more I read. I was a big fan of Pronto and if you enjoyed that book, I believe you’ll really enjoy this.

Story is non existent

This isn’t even a hangout story it’s just goes on and on and is very boring though it starts so promising but then you realize by two or three hours in it’s not going anywhere. There is no plot and the characters have nothing to do.

Another great story

Terrific author. Excellent story as well as narration. The characters come alive. What a pleasurable way to pass the time.

Classic Leonard

Perfect narration for a madcap southern crime comedy with amazing characters. Now I know where the crowes come from in justified.

Disappointing story

The narrator was good, and so were the geographic references to West Palm, however, I did not care for the storyline at all.

Good but a bit darker than expected

I felt this book didn’t have the same quirkiness as others by this author. The characters weren’t as interesting or layered but more black and white.

Kind of fun

This is the first book by Elmore Leonard that I have read. It was an enjoyable read on the whole, but the story gave me a sense of not quite being one story. I think it may reflect life better than many other books, where everything is neatly tied together at the end. This one left a lot of threads snapping in the wind so to speak, which is not necessarily bad, but it felt like it could have gone on, more or less indefinitely. There was no complete closure, just a partial story resolved and that left me somewhat unsatisfied.

But on the whole, quite worth my time.

great entertainment

Good fast moving story original plot original characters I really enjoyed it. I like that the story keeps moving and keeps moving quickly and ends up in kind of a surprising place.

A good book and a good time

Overall, a fun read with memorable characters and good motivations. The story moves along well and Leonard’s scene-setting is very well done.
The ending feels a little rushed compared to the rest of the book which is very well paced.
The narrator’s reading of Kathy Baker, especially at the end, did not seem to fit the scenes.
That being said, a good book and a good time listening to it and reading along!
