Publisher's summary

Jory Keyes leads a normal life as an architect’s assistant until he is witness to a brutal murder. Though initially saved by police Detective Sam Kage, Jory refuses protective custody - he has a life he loves that he won’t give up no matter who is after him. But Jory’s life is in real jeopardy, especially after he agrees to testify about what he saw.

While dealing with attempts on his life, well-meaning friends who want to see him happy, an overly protective boss, and a slowly unfolding mystery that is much more sinister than he could ever imagine, the young gay man finds himself getting involved with Sam, the conflicted and closeted detective. And though Jory may survive the danger, he may not survive a broken heart.

the narration was okay

This one is hard. I liked it but I was exasperated a lot with the Jory Keyes/Harcourt & Sam Kage relationship. But I think the narrator didn't help.

Detective Sam Kage was investigating an attempted murder and had to protect Jory as a witness to that crime. Sam started off making snide comments about Jory, his looks and sexuality, but it became clear Sam was really curious. After taking a walk on the wild side with Jory, Sam starting warring with what he wanted versus what he thought he should want/have versus what his family/society expects him to have.

I don't know if I like Jory and Sam as a couple. Jory brings out the best in Sam, but Sam doesn't bring out the best in Jory--I think Dane does, but Dane is his straight brother/boss.

Detective Sam Kage needs to get a mental health evaluation. I don't know what's wrong with him, but whatever it is, I am sure he will require some shrink time.

Jory may need to see someone too because he started this book off as a callous and indifferent young 22 year old. Detective Sam Kage basically brought out the inner doormat in Jory. If Jory bent any further for Sam, he would have broken his back. At the end, the Aloof Jory was an emotional mess and Sam was still a self-centered bully, lacking self-awareness and a true appreciation of the emotional upheaval he creates.

My fav Calmes story made even greater by narrator

I love this story, with strong characters unfolding their convoluted personalities and twisting paths toward each other, over several books and sequels. I read Matter of Time v 1 and 2 twice before buying the audible version. Paul Morey is one of the best male narrators I've ever heard, good to see such a story matched with such a narrator. He gives a distinctive, expressive voice to each character, major and minor alike, male and female. His dark, growly Sam Cage voice is deep enough to show up on the Richter scale. And yet Paul Morey can reveal every nuance of Jory's charmingly mercurial personality with his voicings. And his pace in the narrative portions is deliberate, unhurried, but always compelling.

Dreamspinner Press, are you listening? So why did you switch to such a low-talent narrator in the sequel "Bulletproof"? I bought it without checking narrator, and was gobsmacked to find that it wasn't Paul Morey narrating the story. More about that in my Bulletproof review.

I don't want to see my favorite stories turned into movies or plays. I do want to hear them read as a performance. I can't wait for the audible version of "But for You", are you listening Dreamspinner Press and Ms. Calmes??? I won't buy it if either Jeff Gelder or Andrew Schwartz narrates. If The Perfect Paul Morey isn't available, there are plenty of other talented narrators like Sean Crisden and Eric G. Dove. Sam and Jory's story deserves to end with better treatment in the audible version.

Thank you DSP and MC and PM for a fabulous first four books in this series.

A nice escape as a first time read or to revisit Jory, Sam, Dane, and their story.

Great book, great narration

Paul Morey did such an excellent job with his narration of this book as well as A Matter of Time Vol 2. Sam and Jory are a favorite couple and their characters really came through. I will continue to listen to the rest of the books in the series by Mary Calmes.

Love this series but ........

The voices used for Sam and Dane are horrible. Sam sounds like a gruff OLD MAN which he is only 34.
Dane with a Texan accent, poor.

Interesting story

I really like this author and found this story immensely enjoying but Ioved her l'Ange series even more and wish she would write Book 3. I keep hoping. As for Matter of Time, I am about to start Volume 2 (again).

Not enough time

I have both the hardcopy and audio. I must say I jjoyed volume 1. Having both is great for road listening. The narrator reads this well written book very well. Sometimes the opposite could kill the book. well done. The story is written well I love the characters. Mary calmes has not disappointed me yet.

Average at best

From the reviews I expected a much more adventurous story. And it could have been, this was a boring story. the worst part of the story is the cliffhanger at the end, I did not realize this was a book 1 of several books. I do not like how the story did not end at the end. I would not recommend this book. I would love to find a Clive Cussler - Dirk Pitt book where the Dirk Pitt is gay. I guess I will keep looking.

Really Bad

What disappointed you about Matter of Time: Vol. 1?

The Narration was awful. Every sentence was followed by a pause. Nothing flowed. Very drone like.

How could the performance have been better?

Maybe something called emotion thrown in.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Matter of Time: Vol. 1?

I don't know, it bored me to tears!

Any additional comments?

I'm skipping purchasing any more audio books by Paul Morey.
