Juliet Beckett believes in destiny. When she moves into Greywethers, a beautiful 16th-century farmhouse, she suspects that more than coincidence has brought her there.
The locals are warm and welcoming, especially the eligible squire of Crofton Hall. Yet beneath the ordinaries, Julia senses a haunting sadness about her new home. Then she learns of Mariana, a beautiful young woman who lived there 300 years ago. It seems history has been waiting for Julia....

"An intense and gripping novel that is almost impossible to put down. The reader would be well advised to seek out a comfortable chair to experience an exceptional read." (The Winnipeg Free Press)
I am never disappointed by Susanna Kearsley. Her writing is superb! There is always some mystery woven into the romance. With an ending to make any Jane Austin Lover swoon.
I very much enjoyed this book. The story was well written, the plot was interesting and the characters had depth and personality.
I am a Company Rep in Central Qld. I travel around 60,000klms a year and rely on my Audiobooks to keep me company on my Country Trips!
Although purchasing the Book originally for my Wife, I decided to have a break from my usual Seafaring & Crime Audiobooks.
Well! What a surprise this one turned out to be!
Carolyn Bonnyman's intimate reading style made me feel that she was sitting opposite me over a cup of coffee and telling me this tale in an almost whispered voice!
Her ability to enhance the somewhat eerie setting just with her voice was quite captivating.
Although I would not normally have selected such a Book for myself, I am so glad I did!
When I first started listening to this book I struggled with the constant changes in time, but as the book progressed and I relaxed into the story I revelled in all the twists and turns. Mariana is a book that you can't multi-task with - it demands full concentration - a lapse of a few minutes will leave you wondering just what happened and how you missed it. It is a book that needs to be read a couple of times to fully understand and appreciate its underlying intricacies. The narration of the book is excellent and flows easily around each character.
creative, romantic, satisying
Carolyn Bonnyman's voice is magical. So gentle and intimate, with great accents. She doesn't over-do character voice changes - makes it all so seemless.
Right up there with the best. Absolutely loved this book
I've nothing to compare it with so if you have any recommendations???
Beautiful reader, great voices and well emoted
I could feel all of the emotions - so well presented
The ending took me completely by surprise, I had to listen to it again.
I don't know what to think overall. At the end I was a little sad and confused. I feel a very important person in the story was left unexplained. However overall the book accomplished what I'm looking for whenever I read ... to totally take me to a different place for a while and left missing the characters as if I know them when the book is done.
As for the reader I don't feel she gave enough inflection in her voice to totally convince me of who the characters were.
Although I consider SK the finest author of this decade, the narration did not compliment this fantastic story.
The entire book
The narrator seemed to mumble at times. I know she was trying to sound etheral but I would rather be able to understand the words. She does not have the voice or range to play the various characters, esp male.
I live for books. Audible makes my drives through LA traffic a pleasure.
I loved this book and Thea narrator. I will admit that at first, I struggled with the narrator. I stop listening and went to another book. But because I have recently become a fan of Susanna Kearsley, I thought I would give it another try and I am so happy that I did.
This story was a beautifully written, with well developed characters and a very good plot. You must pay attention as nearly every sentence is important to the story. It is a complex tale. After my first listen, I listened again the next day.
This story makes you wonder, it pulls at your heart. Carolyn Bonnyman actually turns out to be a very good choice to tell us this story. She does not narrated, she actually tells us a remarkable tale.
Now, I need to go buy another Kearsley novel. Mariana left me totally fulfilled, but wanting yet mor Kearsley.
I particularly enjoyed this book becauseit was narrated beautifully and was a gentle way to relax to a story that took me back in time. I often don't get teary in books but it was difficult not to feel compassion for the characters in this book
"Interesting time-slip tale"
Julia Becket moves to the country from London, and finds her perfect home in the shape of Greywethers a 17th century cottage.
Right from the start we get the sense that the house chose Julia rather than the other way round, and soon Julia realizes all is not quite as it seems. She starts having strange experiences seemingly transported back to the past and into the life of a woman called Mariana.
I quite enjoyed this story, and liked the characters and gentle love story. However I only gave it three stars, This is primarily because of the narrator, Carolyn Bonnyman. I found her voice too monotone, and lacking emotion, especially when there was a lot of dialogue. When different characters were speaking there wasn't enough difference made between them and this could be a bit confusing, as in a pub scene when there were four people all having a conversation together.
I still enjoyed it though and found the story entertaining, with enough mystery about it to keep me interested.
This audo book was really great, Susanna Kearsley is one of my favourtite authors and to listen to it being read was so much more atmospheric, it was as if i was actually there. I recommend this book, you will not be dissapointed.
