©1991 Don DeLillo; (P)2000 Books on Tape, Inc.
"This tale of a reclusive novelist drawn back into the world by acts of terrorism reconfirms DeLillo's status as a modern master and literary provocateur." (Publishers Weekly)
"Michael Prichard...reads with intelligence and understanding, a very good match for this cool, hard, masculine material." (AudioFile)
I am a fan of DeLillo, but this book is a labour only a fan could endure. The narrator is a coma-inducing monotone drone, making it almost impossible to distinguish between characters. White Noise and The Body Artist are where curious Delillo readers should direct their attention...
Violence isn't poetry.
I don't think the story has aged well, but it's a decent snapshot of the early 1990s.
I really don't know. Michael Prichard's deadpan readings of Don DeLillo have sort of grown on me. Of course, he could emote more and put more into the characters, but he has his own voice.
The best thing I can say about DeLillo and Prichard is that I will read more of them. I didn't particularly like this novel, which was written less than a decade before 9/11; it hasn't aged well. On one hand, some of the characters and situations could have been fleshed out a little more, but then again, DeLillo had a vision for this book and realized it.
Complement of narrator to material worked
White Noise for its astute and right on observations of American life at end of 20th century
His unique quality and intelligence
Too many to pick only one too limiting
I was so looking forward to listening to this book after having previously listened to, and thoroughly enjoyed, "White Noise." However, I just couldn't make it through more than a few chapters of this book. It is tedious in the extreme and I decided that life is too short, and my commute too long, to have to suffer through rambling and pointless stuff like this.
