Mao II | [Don DeLillo]

Mao II

In Mao II, Don DeLillo presents an extraordinary new novel about words and images, novelists and terrorists, the mass mind and the arch-individualist. At the heart of the book is Bill Gray, a famous, reclusive writer who escapes the failed novel he has been working on for many years and enters the world of political violence when he gets the chance to aid a hostage trapped in a basement in war-torn Beirut, a nightscape of Semtex explosives.

Publisher's Summary

In Mao II, Don DeLillo presents an extraordinary new novel about words and images, novelists and terrorists, the mass mind and the arch-individualist. At the heart of the book is Bill Gray, a famous, reclusive writer who escapes the failed novel he has been working on for many years and enters the world of political violence when he gets the chance to aid a hostage trapped in a basement in war-torn Beirut, a nightscape of Semtex explosives. Gray's dangerous departure leaves two people stranded: his brilliant, fixated assistant, Scott; and the strange young woman who is Scott's lover, and Bill's. Mao II is a series of set-pieces built around the theme of searching for meaning in a post-modern world.

What the Critics Say

  • PEN/Faulkner Award Winner, 1992

"This tale of a reclusive novelist drawn back into the world by acts of terrorism reconfirms DeLillo's status as a modern master and literary provocateur." (Publishers Weekly)
"Michael Prichard...reads with intelligence and understanding, a very good match for this cool, hard, masculine material." (AudioFile)

    "Tedious..."

I am a fan of DeLillo, but this book is a labour only a fan could endure. The narrator is a coma-inducing monotone drone, making it almost impossible to distinguish between characters. White Noise and The Body Artist are where curious Delillo readers should direct their attention...

    "Boring"

I was so looking forward to listening to this book after having previously listened to, and thoroughly enjoyed, "White Noise." However, I just couldn't make it through more than a few chapters of this book. It is tedious in the extreme and I decided that life is too short, and my commute too long, to have to suffer through rambling and pointless stuff like this.
