Publisher's summary

Was it justice... or revenge? What drove a simple farmer to set out on an impossible quest after a gang of bloodthirsty killers that raped and murdered his wife and slit his small son's throat? Their trail led him halfway across the country and deep into Mexico. One by one he tracked them down and brought them to justice, sometimes at the end of a short rope, more often in front of his fast guns, and he didn't care which.

Great "Manly" read. I loved it.

Narration is excellent. Story is filled with action that makes you cheer for the good guy. Protagonist is a hybrid of "Lancelot"(fights for the innocent and defenseless), "Clint Eastwood"(in his trilogy of spaghetti westerns..kills the brutal with fast passionless efficiency). He is lawman, judge and jury against those who brutalized his wife and son. But even more, along his quest for sweet revenge and justice, he saves countless lives he encounters who are innocent and defenseless against the brutal. I had so many"feel good" moments throughout this book as he punished the evil and saved the good. I recommend highly.

Easy to know White hats from Black hats

Gene Engene brings a western to life, he is the best narrator of westerns.. This is an old fashion western, therefore, it is easy to tell good from evil. The story is a saga of a man's life. Matt Henry's wife and child are killed by an outlaw gang and he sit's off after them. He makes friends with lawmen along the way and crosses into Mexico after the outlaws. His life also takes a happy turn he goes on a cattle drive to Kansas from Texas and also marries the daughter of his first employer. Has nice discussion about long horn, short horn, and hereford cattle. I like Dusty Rhodes books as he has no foul language and no sex scenes. I enjoy a western as a break from other types of book, it makes a relaxing read.

The narrator knocked it out of the park!

This western started out as standard fare, so much so that I almost stopped listening after the first hour...and yet, something still hooked me into the listen. The narrator, Gene Engene, makes a western come alive! Although this is not Louis L'Amour (not even close), I will still listen to another from Dusty Rhodes, but only if it is narrated by Gene Engene.

decent story

I think it was decent as westerns go. However, it became somewhat predictable and sometimes got a little too unrealistic. You got a gun on a guy that's coming at you with a knife and you drop your gun and pull a knife really? because you want a fair fight?
